Circuit Record Holders & Grand Prix History

Michael Schumacher remains the definitive master of the Japanese Grand Prix, having secured a record six victories between 1995 and 2004. Lewis Hamilton follows closely with five wins, achieved across his McLaren and Mercedes tenures. The roll of honour also features two drivers with four wins apiece: Sebastian Vettel, who dominated for Red Bull between 2009 and 2013, and Max Verstappen, who commanded an unbeaten streak for the same outfit from 2022 to 2025.

On the constructors’ front, McLaren holds the most triumphs with nine wins, a tally built from 1977 to 2011. Red Bull Racing has proven a formidable force, amassing eight victories through its distinct eras of dominance with Vettel and Verstappen. Ferrari and Mercedes are tied on seven wins each; Ferrari’s success was headlined by Schumacher’s run, while Mercedes controlled the turbo-hybrid era from 2014-2019 before winning again in 2026. Williams and Benetton also enjoyed significant periods of success.

The event’s history reveals distinct cycles of supremacy. The 1990s were a fierce battleground before the new millennium was defined by Schumacher and Ferrari’s control. This gave way to a competitive spell involving Renault and McLaren. Red Bull’s authority with Vettel marked the early 2010s, immediately followed by Mercedes’ hybrid-era stranglehold. The 2020s began with an emphatic four-year unbeaten run for Max Verstappen, a sequence halted by Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s breakthrough win for Mercedes in 2026, signalling a potential competitive shift.
