The first free practice session is an important part of every Formula 1 weekend. During FP1, drivers and teams gather large amounts of data regarding tire wear, tire temperature, fuel consumption, race pace, and car setup.
This information is used to further improve performance for qualifying and the Grand Prix.
Teams such as McLaren, Red Bull Racing, Ferrari, Mercedes, Aston Martin, Williams, Alpine, Haas, Audi, Racing Bulls, and Cadillac use this session to compare not only their own performance but also that of their competitors.
As a result, an initial picture of the pecking order for the remainder of the weekend often begins to emerge.
More than just the fastest lap time
The outcome of FP1 is about more than just who was the fastest driver of the session. Analysts also look at long runs, race pace, gaps between teammates, DRS effectiveness, tire management, and performance across Pirelli’s various tire compounds.
Furthermore, factors such as track temperature, track evolution, wind, grip levels, and any red flags play a significant role in interpreting lap times.
As a result, the findings from FP1 can sometimes provide a distorted picture of the true competitive hierarchy. Although FP1 does not award any World Championship points, the session often serves as the foundation for the remainder of the race weekend.
Teams use the data collected to further refine their car setups and prepare for qualifying, the sprint shootout, the sprint race, and the Grand Prix.
