Race Summary & Analysis (2026)

George Russell led a commanding Mercedes 1-2 to victory at the 2026 Australian Grand Prix, finishing the 58-lap race with a controlled drive. Teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli crossed the line just 2.974 seconds behind to secure a stellar second place, locking out the top two steps for the team. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc completed the podium, finishing a distant third, over 15 seconds adrift of the race winner and unable to challenge the dominant pace of the Mercedes pair.

Lewis Hamilton narrowly missed the podium, finishing fourth in the second Ferrari, 16.144 seconds from the lead. A significant gap separated the top four from the rest of the pack, with McLaren’s Lando Norris securing fifth place ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in sixth. The final points positions were claimed by drivers a lap down, highlighted by an impressive seventh place for Oliver Bearman in the Haas. Arvid Lindblad (Racing Bulls), Gabriel Bortoleto (Audi), and Pierre Gasly (Alpine) rounded out the top ten.

The race saw significant attrition with two drivers failing to complete any laps: McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Audi’s Nico Hülkenberg. Several other cars retired but were classified. Isack Hadjar (Red Bull) was classified 48 laps down, while Valtteri Bottas’s Cadillac was 43 laps down. Aston Martin suffered a double DNF, with Fernando Alonso retiring 37 laps down from the leader and Lance Stroll classified 15 laps down.
