Lewis Hamilton has commended Mercedes for its development strategy concerning Andrea Kimi Antonelli, as the Italian driver approaches a potential Formula 1 World Championship triumph at the United States Grand Prix. Hamilton, now with Ferrari, highlighted the environment fostered by Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff as crucial to Antonelli’s success.
Antonelli, aged 20, is on the verge of becoming the youngest-ever F1 World Champion in his sophomore season. He arrives at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) leading the 2026 Drivers’ Championship with 340 points.
The Mercedes driver has secured eight Grand Prix victories this season. His consistent performance has placed him 102 points ahead of teammate George Russell and 111 points clear of Hamilton in the standings.
Hamilton attributed much of Antonelli’s rapid development to the leadership at Mercedes. He described Wolff’s role in creating a supportive structure, likening it to assembling a ‘puzzle’ around the driver to maximise potential.
“Definitely, great leadership. Toto is exceptional at what he does and the environment he creates and the people he puts around him.”
This approach, according to Hamilton, mirrors his own formative years in the sport, both at McLaren and during his initial period with Mercedes. He noted similarities in how Antonelli has been able to refine his craft on track.
Mercedes’ development strategy for Antonelli has involved structured integration, extensive simulator time, and targeted testing. Wolff has consistently emphasised providing a supportive environment to allow young drivers to develop without undue pressure.
Antonelli joined the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team’s junior programme in 2019. He progressed through various junior categories, including winning titles in Italian F4 and the Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine (FRECA).
He made his Formula 1 debut with Mercedes in 2025, securing two podium finishes and an eighth-place championship standing in his rookie year.
To clinch the 2026 title at COTA, Antonelli must win the United States Grand Prix. Additionally, Russell must finish ninth or lower, and Hamilton must finish fifth or lower.
Should Antonelli win, he would accumulate 365 points. If Russell finishes ninth, the points gap would be 125. Antonelli would secure the title on countback due to holding nine race wins compared to Russell’s maximum of eight.
Sebastian Vettel currently holds the record for the youngest F1 World Champion, having won his first title in 2010 at 23 years and 134 days old. Antonelli, at 20, would significantly lower this record.
Russell, despite securing two victories and seven podiums in 2026, has acknowledged that his championship hopes have diminished. He currently sits third in the standings.
Mercedes has confirmed that both Antonelli and Russell will run the latest upgrade package on their W17 cars at the United States Grand Prix. This follows a split-spec strategy at the previous Singapore Grand Prix.
