Lando Norris has committed to making improved decisions following his collision with teammate Oscar Piastri during the Singapore Grand Prix sprint race. The incident, which occurred on the final lap at Marina Bay, resulted in both McLaren cars spinning and cost the team eight championship points.

The clash took place as Norris attempted an overtake on Piastri for fourth position at Turn 5. Piastri subsequently retired from the race, while Norris recovered to finish eighth, securing a single point.

Initially, Norris adopted a flippant and sarcastic tone when questioned by media regarding the incident. However, following discussions with McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella and CEO Zak Brown, he accepted responsibility for the contact.

McLaren conducted further internal meetings at its Woking headquarters in the week between the Singapore event and the upcoming United States Grand Prix. The team now considers the matter resolved.

Norris stated his commitment to learning from the error and improving his performance for the team.

“I take responsibility for my mistakes, and I learn from them,” Norris said in McLaren’s preview for the Austin race. “This team is my motivation every weekend, and my aim is to repay the hard work everyone puts in by improving, making better decisions, and representing the team in the best possible way.”

Andrea Stella publicly described the incident as “unacceptable,” emphasizing that team interests must always take precedence over individual ambition. He confirmed that internal discussions were held to reinforce team protocols.

Zak Brown issued a stern warning to both drivers, stating that such an incident “must not happen again.” He stressed the importance of avoiding further collisions as McLaren battles in the Constructors’ Championship.

Oscar Piastri expressed disappointment with the outcome but indicated an understanding of Norris’s competitive drive. He confirmed his participation in team discussions and stated a focus on future races.

The stewards investigated the collision but deemed it a racing incident, issuing no penalties to either driver.

This incident reignited discussions surrounding McLaren’s internal “Papaya Rules,” which govern on-track conduct between its drivers. These rules were established after previous close calls and collisions.

Notable prior incidents include a near collision at the 2024 Italian Grand Prix and contact at the 2025 Canadian Grand Prix, where Norris drove into the back of Piastri. Piastri was also held accountable for an incident at the 2025 United States Grand Prix sprint.

McLaren, the reigning Constructors’ Champion, currently holds third position in the 2026 championship standings with 339 points. They are seven points ahead of Red Bull and 105 points behind Ferrari.

Norris has secured two victories this season, in Hungary and the Netherlands. Piastri has achieved multiple podium finishes but is yet to claim a Grand Prix win in 2026.

The team now prepares for the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin. McLaren is bringing a modest selection of upgrades to the MCL40, aiming to reverse a recent disappointing run of results.

Oscar Piastri has noted that the MCL40’s underlying handling problems are unlikely to be fully resolved before the 2027 car. Team Principal Andrea Stella has echoed this sentiment.
