George Russell has disclosed that his 2025 Singapore Grand Prix victory was achieved amidst significant personal challenges. The Mercedes driver indicated that off-track issues contributed to a ‘psychologically busy brain’ during the race weekend. He made these comments during an interview with Austrian broadcaster ORF Sport, reflecting on images of his celebration with partner Carmen Mundt.

Russell secured pole position for the 2025 Singapore Grand Prix on October 5, 2025, converting it into his second victory of that season. His qualifying lap of 1:29.158 established a new outright lap record for the Marina Bay Street Circuit. Despite a moment where he made contact with the wall, Russell maintained his pace to claim pole.

He described the 2025 event as a ‘very special weekend’ due to undisclosed circumstances occurring behind the scenes. Russell declined to provide further details, stating only, ‘No, one day.’ He acknowledged his partner’s support during these private difficulties.

The 2026 Formula 1 season has presented a different scenario for Russell. He currently sits second in the Drivers’ Championship standings. His teammate, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, leads the championship by 102 points.

Russell’s recent Singapore Grand Prix weekend in 2026 proved challenging. He crashed during the sprint race. Following a power unit penalty, he started the main Grand Prix from the rear of the grid. Russell ultimately finished ninth in the race.

During the 2026 Singapore practice session, Russell topped the timesheets using an older-specification Mercedes W17. Antonelli, meanwhile, ran an upgraded version of the car. Mercedes confirmed they had only one upgraded front wing available in Singapore, which was tested on Antonelli’s car.

The 2026 season introduced significant technical regulation changes, including a revised power unit and new active aerodynamics. Mercedes initially demonstrated strong performance, winning the first six Grands Prix of the year. However, rival teams have since introduced upgrades, reducing Mercedes’ advantage.

Russell’s 2026 campaign has been affected by reliability issues. He retired from third place in Malaysia due to a power-unit failure. A power unit electronic failure also ended his race in Canada. These incidents have contributed to his current points deficit.

The upcoming United States Grand Prix, scheduled for October 23-25, 2026, offers Antonelli his first opportunity to clinch the Drivers’ Championship. For Antonelli to secure the title in Austin, he must win the race, Russell must finish ninth or lower, and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton must finish fifth or lower.

Mercedes plans to run the upgraded W17, including the new front wing, on both Russell’s and Antonelli’s cars at the Circuit of the Americas. Ferrari is also bringing a package of aerodynamic upgrades to Austin. McLaren has further upgrades scheduled for the upcoming triple-header of races.

Despite the championship situation, Russell maintains his focus on individual race performance. He has stated his intention to fight for pole position and victory at every remaining event.
