Andrea Kimi Antonelli is positioned to secure the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship at the Mexican Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver, aged 20, can become the sport’s youngest-ever champion, surpassing Sebastian Vettel’s record set in 2010.
Antonelli needs to finish ninth or higher in the race to guarantee the title, irrespective of other results. If he finishes tenth, Mercedes teammate George Russell must not win. Should Antonelli fail to score points, neither Russell nor Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton must win for him to clinch the championship.
Antonelli starts fourth on the grid at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. He qualified fifth but gained a position due to a grid penalty for Max Verstappen. Antonelli entered the weekend with a 123-point lead over Russell and 124 points over Hamilton.
Liam Lawson of Racing Bulls will start the Mexican Grand Prix from the pit lane. This follows a series of penalties and car changes. Lawson initially received a one-place grid penalty for a collision with Max Verstappen during Free Practice 2.
The incident involved Verstappen attempting to overtake Lawson, resulting in contact and a brief red flag. Lawson later apologised to Verstappen for the contact. Verstappen described Lawson’s actions as ‘not very smart behaviour,’ particularly given Lawson’s unconfirmed 2027 seat.
Lawson was subsequently disqualified from qualifying due to a technical infringement related to MGU-K deployment. His team then opted for set-up changes and a new power unit, necessitating the pit lane start.
Lewis Hamilton secured pole position for Ferrari, his first since the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix. This marks his 105th career pole. At 41, Hamilton is the oldest polesitter in Formula 1 since Mario Andretti in 1982.
Charles Leclerc received a 5-second time penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage during the race. George Russell was handed a 10-second time penalty for a collision with Isack Hadjar on the opening lap.
Aston Martin experienced a double retirement early in the race. Fernando Alonso retired due to a water pressure issue, while Lance Stroll pulled over at Turn 6, triggering a virtual safety car.
Haas replaced Esteban Ocon with reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa for the remainder of the Grand Prix weekend. The team stated Ocon’s absence was not due to illness. Ocon acknowledged ‘a difference in viewpoints’ after Free Practice 2 but denied any physical altercation.
Pirelli supplied the C3 (Hard), C4 (Medium), and C5 (Soft) compounds for the event. Extensive resurfacing of the circuit has introduced uncertainty regarding tyre strategy. A one-stop strategy, typically medium to soft, is considered the preferred option.
The high altitude of the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez reduces aerodynamic load, increasing tyre slip and the potential for graining. Max Verstappen started the race on medium tyres, while most of the top nine opted for soft compounds.
