Max Verstappen, born on September 30, 1997, made his Formula 1 debut at a remarkably young age, setting a new record for the sport. He became the youngest driver to start a Grand Prix, a milestone achieved at the 2015 Australian Grand Prix.
His rapid ascent through the motorsport ranks saw him not only debut at 17 years old but also secure his first Grand Prix victory before turning 19, further cementing his place in Formula 1 history.
Max Verstappen’s Formula 1 debut
Max Verstappen officially made his Formula 1 race debut at the 2015 Australian Grand Prix, driving for Scuderia Toro Rosso. At the time of his first race start, he was 17 years and 166 days old, making him the youngest driver ever to compete in a Formula 1 World Championship event.
Prior to his full race debut, Verstappen had already participated in a Formula 1 weekend during the first free practice session of the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix. He was 17 years and 3 days old when he took part in that session for Toro Rosso.
His exceptionally young entry into the sport prompted the FIA to implement a new rule. Following Verstappen’s debut, the governing body mandated that drivers must be at least 18 years old to obtain a Super Licence and compete in Formula 1.
The youngest Grand Prix winner in history
Max Verstappen continued to rewrite the record books by becoming the youngest-ever Formula 1 Grand Prix winner. This historic achievement occurred at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix, in his very first race for Red Bull Racing after being promoted from Toro Rosso.
He was 18 years and 228 days old when he crossed the finish line in Barcelona, displacing Sebastian Vettel as the previous record holder. Verstappen’s victory came after a strategic two-stop race, holding off Ferrari’s Kimi Räikkönen.
