Max Verstappen has described the Circuit of the Americas track surface as “unacceptable” ahead of the United States Grand Prix. The Red Bull driver voiced significant concerns regarding the extensive bumps across the circuit in Austin, Texas.

Verstappen stated that the low ride heights of current Formula 1 cars exacerbate the issue, particularly under braking and through corners. He noted that the problem has worsened despite previous attempts at partial resurfacing.

The Dutch driver emphasized that while the circuit layout remains a favourite, the recurring surface degradation requires a comprehensive solution. He suggested a full track overhaul is necessary to address the underlying issues, rather than temporary fixes.

In addition to track conditions, three drivers have incurred grid penalties for exceeding their annual allowance of power unit components. Arvid Lindblad, driving for Visa Cash App Racing Bulls, will receive a five-place grid penalty.

Lindblad has utilized his sixth internal combustion engine (ICE) of the season, exceeding the four permitted by FIA regulations for the 2026 season.

Gabriel Bortoleto of Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber faces a more substantial penalty. He will serve two ten-place grid drops.

Bortoleto’s penalties stem from the installation of a fourth energy store (ES) and a fourth set of control electronics (CE). FIA regulations permit only two of each component per season.

Franco Colapinto, representing Williams Racing, has also received a ten-place grid penalty. This is due to the fitment of his fourth set of control electronics for the year.

Earlier in the weekend, Charles Leclerc recorded the fastest time during the opening practice session. The Ferrari driver, however, cautioned against overstating the impact of their latest car upgrade.

The feeling is quite good but we need to be careful. Obviously it’s only Friday. We are seeing what we expected but it’s definitely not what everybody thinks in terms of upgrade and lap time gain.

Leclerc added that the car’s balance was strong from the outset, contributing to their immediate performance. He suggested other teams likely have more performance to unlock.

Adrian Newey, Chief Technical Officer at Aston Martin, commented on Honda’s progress as a power unit supplier. He indicated that Honda’s current performance is somewhat behind their previous collaboration with Red Bull in 2019.

Newey expressed confidence in Honda’s determination and processes, anticipating accelerated development in the future. Honda is the power unit supplier for Aston Martin in the 2026 season.

The United States Grand Prix weekend continues today, Saturday, October 24, 2026, with Practice Three scheduled for 6:30 PM UTC. Qualifying will follow at 10:00 PM UTC.

Kimi Antonelli, driving for Mercedes, is currently leading the Drivers’ Championship standings. The US Grand Prix is a critical event in his pursuit of a maiden F1 title.
