Kimi Antonelli secured pole position for the United States Grand Prix in Austin, placing him in contention to clinch the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship. Despite this, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has stated that an immediate title victory for Antonelli is ‘not realistic.’

Wolff’s assessment stems from Mercedes’ perceived lack of race pace during Friday’s long runs at the Circuit of the Americas.

Antonelli, aged 20, could become the youngest F1 world champion if he wins Sunday’s race, George Russell finishes ninth or lower, and Lewis Hamilton finishes fifth or lower.

The Italian driver recorded a 1:34.035s lap in Q3 to take pole position.

Max Verstappen qualified second for Red Bull, 0.179 seconds behind Antonelli.

Isack Hadjar placed his Red Bull third on the grid, with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton securing fourth and fifth for Ferrari.

George Russell will start sixth for Mercedes.

The remainder of the top ten features Oscar Piastri in seventh, Lando Norris in eighth, Liam Lawson in ninth, and Pierre Gasly in tenth.

Arvid Lindblad, who initially qualified ninth, will start 14th due to a five-place grid penalty for a power unit infringement.

Antonelli leads the Drivers’ Championship with 340 points heading into the Austin event.

Teammate Russell is second with 238 points, 102 points adrift, while Hamilton holds third with 229 points.

Verstappen is currently fourth in the standings with 221 points.

Mercedes Deputy Team Principal Bradley Lord echoed Wolff’s caution, indicating that an Antonelli title win this weekend would signify a ‘really bad race’ for the team, given the necessary results from Russell.

‘Ultimately, for Kimi to win this weekend, it means the team’s had a really bad race because the maths say George needs to be ninth or below, and that isn’t how we want to go racing, and the result we’re aiming for,’ Lord stated.

Antonelli’s pole position was unexpected, as Ferrari had demonstrated strong pace throughout practice, with Charles Leclerc topping FP1 and FP2, and Lewis Hamilton leading FP3.

Ferrari’s qualifying performance in Q3 did not match their practice form.

Verstappen reported a lack of grip and issues with his tyres ‘coming alive’ during Q3, despite consistent pace in earlier sessions.

Red Bull’s technical director Pierre Waché highlighted the team’s focus on improving low-speed performance.

The Circuit of the Americas, a 5.513-kilometre track, presents a diverse challenge with high-speed corners and slower, traction-demanding sections.

Pirelli has supplied the C2 (Hard), C3 (Medium), and C4 (Soft) compounds for the Grand Prix, a return to a conventional selection after a different approach in 2025.

Tyre wear is anticipated to be a significant factor due to the ageing asphalt, particularly in the third sector where thermal degradation on the rear tyres is prominent.

A one-stop strategy is considered the most probable race approach, though high ambient temperatures could increase degradation and necessitate additional stops.

Russell faced a challenging weekend, admitting to ‘two bad laps in Q3′ and struggling to adapt to Mercedes’ new upgrade package.

His Q2 lap was 0.25 seconds faster than his Q3 effort.

Historically, 11 of the 13 previous races at COTA have been won by a driver starting from the front row.

The uphill run to Turn 1 at the start offers a clear overtaking opportunity for those behind the pole-sitter.
