Stefan Bellof, a German racing driver, died on September 1, 1985, at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps during the 1000 km of Spa World Sportscar Championship race. Bellof, aged 27, was considered a significant talent in motorsport, having achieved notable success in both sportscar racing and a brief Formula 1 career.

His career began in karting in 1973, leading to a Luxembourg karting championship in 1976 and a German championship in 1980. Bellof then progressed to Formula Ford, securing the 1600cc class title in 1980, before making his Formula Two debut in 1982, where he won his first two races.

Bellof joined the Rothmans Porsche factory team in 1983, quickly establishing himself. On May 28, 1983, he set an unofficial qualifying lap record of 6:11.13 at the Nürburgring Nordschleife in a Porsche 956 (chassis no. 007) for the 1000 km Nürburgring race.

This record, achieved at an average speed of 202.073 kilometres per hour, stood for 35 years until 2018. Bellof also recorded the official race lap record of 6:25.91 during the same event. His dominance continued, culminating in the 1984 FIA World Endurance Championship title with Porsche.

Bellof’s Formula 1 career commenced in 1984 with Tyrrell Racing, where he competed for two seasons. The Tyrrell cars, powered by naturally aspirated Ford engines, were at a significant disadvantage against the more powerful turbocharged rivals of the era.

The 1984 season was marred by Tyrrell’s retrospective disqualification from all races due to technical infringements. Despite this, Bellof demonstrated his skill, notably running third in the wet 1984 Monaco Grand Prix before the race was stopped, a result later expunged from the records.

In 1985, Bellof scored four points, including a fourth-place finish at the Detroit Grand Prix, which would be his final points in Formula 1. His last Formula 1 appearance was at the Dutch Grand Prix.

The fatal accident at Spa-Francorchamps occurred on lap 78 of the 1000 km race. Bellof, driving a Brun-Porsche 956B, was attempting to overtake Jacky Ickx’s factory Porsche 962C for the lead at Eau Rouge.

The two cars collided, and Bellof’s Porsche impacted a concrete barrier. He was pronounced dead approximately an hour later at the circuit’s medical centre. This incident, following the death of Manfred Winkelhock weeks prior, led Formula 1 teams to implement stricter contract clauses prohibiting drivers from competing in other championships.

Bellof’s talent was widely recognized, with figures such as Michael Schumacher citing him as a childhood idol. Gerhard Berger also stated that Bellof was on par with Ayrton Senna. The Nürburgring has since honoured his legacy by naming a section of the track the ‘Stefan Bellof-S’.
