Fernando Alonso has reiterated his assessment of driver quality at the rear of the Formula 1 grid, following a collision with Alexander Albon at the recent United States Grand Prix. The Aston Martin driver’s comments, initially made after the Austin race, were reinforced ahead of the Mexican Grand Prix.

Alonso stated that the ‘quality of the drivers in the lower third of the grid is very low’ after the incident at Turn 11 of the Circuit of the Americas.

He claimed his AMR26 sustained significant damage, including half of its floor, which he estimated cost him ‘half a second or more’ per lap. Alonso suggested a points finish was a strong possibility without the contact.

The two-time world champion finished 16th in Austin, one position ahead of Albon, despite the extensive car damage. Stewards did not issue any penalties for the opening lap contact.

Speaking in Mexico City, Alonso confirmed his views had not changed. He noted that the reaction from certain drivers ‘tells you everything’ about who felt targeted by his remarks.

Alonso clarified his criticism was not aimed at a specific number of drivers. He also indicated his frustration extends beyond Austin, having spent the entire 2026 season battling in that part of the field.

He attributed some mistakes to the inherent difficulty of driving cars at the back of the grid, which offer less grip. However, Alonso maintained that many first-lap incidents and collisions are unnecessary.

Aston Martin has experienced a challenging 2026 season, often competing in the midfield or at the rear. Alonso’s best result this year was a 10th place in Monaco, securing the team’s sole point by August.

The team has faced issues with its chassis and Honda power unit, particularly in the first half of the season. Despite upgrades, consistent points finishes have remained elusive.

Alexander Albon, driving for Williams, offered a contrasting perspective on grid quality. He expressed respect for Alonso but disagreed with the assessment of driver standards.

Albon asserted that the current F1 grid is strong, citing a reduction in ‘pay drivers’ compared to a decade or more ago. He described the Austin incident as ’50/50′.

Regarding the on-track battle, Albon characterised it as ‘fun’. He also stated his hope that he and Alonso ‘don’t cross paths’ during the upcoming Mexican Grand Prix.

Williams has also endured a difficult 2026 season, falling short of its own expectations. The team missed pre-season testing and has struggled with an overweight car and technical issues.

Albon and teammate Carlos Sainz have rarely contended for points, with Williams scoring 11 points by August. Albon has been outqualified by Sainz 12-1 this season.

Both Fernando Alonso and Alexander Albon have contracts extending into the 2027 season with their respective teams.
