Andrea Kimi Antonelli clinched the 2026 Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship at the Mexico City Grand Prix on Sunday, November 1, 2026. He secured the title with a third-place finish in the race.
At 20 years and 68 days old, Antonelli becomes the youngest F1 champion in the sport’s 76-year history. This achievement surpasses Sebastian Vettel’s previous record, set in 2010, when Vettel was 23 years and 134 days old.
Antonelli is the first Italian driver to win the Formula 1 championship since Alberto Ascari in 1953. Ascari secured back-to-back titles in 1952 and 1953 with Ferrari.
The 2026 season marks Mercedes’ first drivers’ championship since Lewis Hamilton’s win in 2020. Antonelli took the championship lead after the third round in Japan and maintained a significant points advantage throughout the season.
He arrived at the Mexico City Grand Prix with 365 points, holding a 123-point lead over teammate George Russell and 124 points over Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton.
Antonelli’s 2026 campaign included nine race victories and 16 podium finishes from 19 rounds. This consistent performance included a streak of five consecutive wins from the Chinese Grand Prix to the Monaco Grand Prix.
His first F1 win came from pole position in China. He also demonstrated strong racecraft by winning the Italian Grand Prix from 19th on the grid.
The 2026 technical regulations introduced a new generation of power units with a 50:50 power split between the internal combustion engine and the electrical side. This shift placed greater emphasis on energy management and suited Antonelli’s driving style.
George Russell, initially the pre-season favourite, experienced a challenging 2026 season. His driving style, which focuses on mid-corner to exit speed, was reportedly hindered by the new power unit characteristics and high rear tyre pressures.
Russell also faced reliability issues, including a power unit failure in Malaysia, and inconsistent performances. He received a 10-second penalty in Mexico after contact with Isack Hadjar. Russell now sits third in the drivers’ standings, behind Hamilton.
Ferrari had the opportunity to sign Antonelli earlier in his career. Massimo Rivola, then director of the Ferrari Driver Academy, identified Antonelli’s talent at age 11.
However, Maurizio Arrivabene, Ferrari’s team principal at the time, deemed Antonelli ‘too young’ or cited institutional limitations, leading to his rejection. Mercedes subsequently secured Antonelli for their junior program.
Antonelli’s junior career included multiple karting championships, winning the Italian and ADAC F4 titles in 2022. He also secured the Formula Regional Middle East and European championships in 2023.
He bypassed Formula 3, moving directly into Formula 2 in 2024 with Prema. In F2, he finished sixth overall, securing two victories.
Antonelli made his F1 practice debut at Monza in August 2024, crashing at Parabolica. This incident contributed to a cautious approach during parts of his 2025 rookie F1 season. He replaced Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes in 2025.
His rookie year included a maiden F1 podium in Canada and a sprint pole position in Miami. Antonelli’s rapid ascent culminated in his 2026 championship win, achieved in only his second F1 season.
