The Mexican Grand Prix was suspended on lap 46 of 71 following a significant incident involving Valtteri Bottas. Max Verstappen currently leads the race at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. The event is set to resume with a standing start.

Valtteri Bottas crashed his Cadillac at Turn 1 on lap 44. His front-left suspension failed at approximately 320 kilometres per hour, sending the car backwards into the Tecpro barriers.

Bottas was initially winded but subsequently gave a thumbs-up to medical personnel. He was then transported to the circuit’s medical centre for precautionary assessments.

The red flag was deployed to allow for necessary repairs to the damaged Tecpro barrier. At the time of the suspension, Verstappen held the lead, followed by Charles Leclerc, Kimi Antonelli, and Lewis Hamilton.

Kimi Antonelli is in contention to secure the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship at this event. A ninth-place finish or higher would guarantee him the title, irrespective of his rivals’ results.

Antonelli, who leads George Russell by 123 points and Lewis Hamilton by 124 points, could also become champion if neither Russell nor Hamilton wins the Grand Prix. He would be the youngest F1 World Champion.

Lewis Hamilton started the race from pole position, with George Russell alongside him in second. Max Verstappen began from fifth on medium compound tyres, while Antonelli started fourth.

Early in the race, Charles Leclerc and Hamilton were involved in an incident at Turn 4. Leclerc left the track and gained an advantage, moving ahead of Hamilton.

The stewards issued Leclerc a five-second time penalty on lap 13 for leaving the track and gaining an advantage. They determined both cars entered Turn 4 with excessive speed.

Hamilton expressed frustration over the penalty, stating that Leclerc benefited from clean air. He also commented, ‘The stewards are basically handing Charles this win. We agreed, in the drivers’ briefing.’

George Russell also received a ten-second time penalty for spinning Isack Hadjar at Turn 6. Russell has reported ongoing difficulties with his Mercedes W17 chassis this season.

During the red flag period, teams are permitted to change tyres. This counts towards the mandatory two-compound rule, offering a strategic advantage to those who had not yet pitted.

The race will restart with a standing start, with 25 laps remaining. The restart order was determined from the last point at which all car positions could be definitively established.

The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez presents unique challenges due to its altitude of 2,200 metres. This reduces aerodynamic downforce and affects engine cooling efficiency.

Race day conditions include sunny skies with air temperatures between 25-27°C and track temperatures reaching 40-45°C. Moderate north winds are also a factor.

The 2026 season introduced a revised start procedure. A five-second blue light phase precedes the traditional start lights, allowing drivers to manage turbo lag from the new power unit regulations.
