Andrea Kimi Antonelli is set to compete in the Mexico City Grand Prix today, Sunday, November 1, 2026, with the opportunity to secure his maiden Formula 1 world title. The Mercedes driver has admitted to feeling ‘tense’ and unwell in the lead-up to the crucial race.

Antonelli missed Thursday’s media day due to illness, which he later detailed as a ‘high fever and stomach problems’ that left him feeling ‘very bad.’ He reported feeling ‘low on energy’ after qualifying.

The 20-year-old Italian qualified fifth but will start fourth on the grid at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, following a grid penalty for Max Verstappen.

Antonelli holds a significant lead in the 2026 Drivers’ Championship with 365 points. He is 123 points ahead of his Mercedes teammate George Russell and 124 points clear of Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton.

With 125 points still available across the remaining five rounds of the season, only Russell and Hamilton can mathematically prevent Antonelli from clinching the championship in Mexico.

Antonelli requires only two points, equivalent to a ninth-place finish, to secure the title. This would be sufficient even if Russell were to win the race.

Should Hamilton win the Grand Prix, a tenth-place finish would still be enough for Antonelli to become champion. He would also secure the title if neither Russell nor Hamilton wins, regardless of his own result.

If successful, Antonelli would become the youngest Formula 1 world champion in history, surpassing Sebastian Vettel’s record from 2010. He would also be the first Italian champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953.

During Saturday’s qualifying session, Lewis Hamilton secured pole position for Ferrari with a lap time of 1:16.514. Russell qualified second, just 0.009 seconds behind.

Charles Leclerc placed third for Ferrari, while Antonelli’s promotion to fourth means he starts directly behind his two championship rivals.

The top ten qualifiers for the Mexico City Grand Prix are: 1. Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari), 2. George Russell (Mercedes), 3. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), 4. Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes), 5. Max Verstappen (Red Bull), 6. Lando Norris (McLaren), 7. Isack Hadjar (Red Bull), 8. Arvid Lindblad (Racing Bulls), 9. Pierre Gasly (Alpine), 10. Nico Hulkenberg (Audi).

Liam Lawson of Racing Bulls was disqualified from qualifying due to a technical infringement, demoting him to the back of the grid.

Antonelli expressed his fatigue and heightened tension, stating, ‘I feel very tired to be fair; I still haven’t recovered completely.’ He added that constant reminders of the impending title had made him ‘a bit more tense than usual.’

I’ve been trying to block this noise as much as possible, but it hasn’t been easy.

He noted struggles with grip on new tyres in Q3 but maintained optimism for the race, having saved a set of new tyres.

Antonelli is in his second season with the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team, having joined their junior programme in 2019. George Russell is his teammate, and Fred Vesti serves as the team’s third driver.

The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez circuit in Mexico City is 4.304 km long and features 17 turns. The race will consist of 71 laps, covering a total distance of 305.35 km.

The circuit’s high altitude, approximately 2,240 meters above sea level, presents unique challenges for car performance, affecting downforce and cooling, as well as driver exertion.

Antonelli’s nine victories, seven pole positions, and 15 podium finishes this season underscore his dominant performance leading into this championship decider.

The race today will determine if Antonelli can overcome his physical condition and the pressure to secure the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship.
