George Russell has outlined a revised objective for the conclusion of the 2026 Formula 1 season, focusing on achieving consistent performance. This shift in priority comes as his championship aspirations have been effectively concluded, with Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli poised to secure the drivers’ title at this weekend’s Mexican Grand Prix.

Antonelli, who leads the standings by 123 points, requires only a ninth-place finish in Mexico City to become the youngest champion in the sport’s history. The Italian driver has accumulated 365 points, while Russell holds 242 points ahead of the 19th round of the championship.

Russell’s 2026 campaign has been marked by significant fluctuations in form. He secured a dominant victory from pole position in Baku, demonstrating strong pace. However, in the three subsequent races, he managed to score only six points, including an eighth-place finish at the recent United States Grand Prix.

The British driver attributes his inconsistency to specific characteristics of the 2026 regulations. He noted that the energy-hungry power units and elevated rear tyre pressures have hindered his natural driving style. Russell typically focuses on mid-to-exit corner phases, applying early throttle, which is less efficient with the current power unit demands.

Furthermore, the Mercedes W17 car has presented balance challenges. An aerodynamic upgrade introduced in Malaysia reportedly increased overall load but shifted the balance forward, leading to understeer. This has narrowed the car’s operating window and made it more difficult for drivers to extract consistent performance.

Antonelli’s path to the 2026 title follows a mixed rookie season in 2025, where he replaced Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes. Despite being described as having a ‘lacklustre’ debut year in some assessments, he secured 150 points and three podium finishes.

His 2025 season included a period of struggle during the European leg, where he admitted feeling the pressure. However, Antonelli recovered strongly in the latter half of the year, demonstrating resilience and securing a podium in Las Vegas despite a poor qualifying performance.

The Mexican Grand Prix at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez presents unique technical challenges due to its high altitude, situated over 2,200 meters above sea level. The thinner air significantly reduces aerodynamic downforce and drag, compelling teams to run maximum-downforce configurations despite the circuit’s long straights.

Cooling is a critical concern for both brakes and power units, as the reduced air density impedes heat dissipation. The 2026 power unit regulations, which removed the MGU-H and increased electrical power from the MGU-K, further complicate turbocharger boost and energy deployment strategies at this altitude.

The circuit has undergone extensive resurfacing for 2026, affecting sections from Turn 16 to Turn 1 and from Turn 7 to Turn 16. This introduces an unknown factor regarding tyre grip and potential degradation. Teams anticipate a two-stop strategy using medium and soft compounds, though tyre wear could alter this.

Overtaking is historically difficult in Mexico City, partly due to the rapid overheating of power units and brakes when following other cars. This places a premium on qualifying performance. The event also has a high probability of safety car or virtual safety car interventions.

Russell’s immediate focus remains on understanding and rectifying the performance fluctuations. He aims to conclude the 2026 season with a consistent run of results, with an eye towards a stronger championship challenge in 2027.
