The Mercedes driver executed a one-stop strategy, controlling the race from pole position. He managed his tyres effectively throughout the 56-lap event.
Following this race, Antonelli holds a 48-point lead over his closest championship rival, George Russell. Four races remain in the 2026 season.
Antonelli requires a minimum of 27 points from the upcoming Mexican Grand Prix to mathematically clinch his maiden Formula 1 World Championship title.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has publicly praised Antonelli’s consistent performance. Wolff highlighted the driver’s maturity under championship pressure throughout the season.
Leclerc’s second-place finish for Ferrari followed an extended battle with Verstappen. The Monegasque driver ran a two-stop strategy and demonstrated strong late-race pace.
Ferrari has implemented a series of minor aerodynamic adjustments and suspension tweaks over the past three races. These changes have contributed to an improved car balance.

Verstappen’s third-place finish came after a challenging afternoon. He reported engine braking problems and insufficient pace.
The Red Bull RB22 experienced intermittent power unit issues during the Grand Prix. These were specifically related to engine braking inconsistency.
This marks the third instance of reported power unit inconsistencies for Red Bull in the latter half of the 2026 season. This raises concerns about reliability.
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner acknowledged the power unit problems. He stated the team is working with its engine supplier to resolve the recurring issues.
Antonelli commented on the team’s strategy and car performance.
“It was the result we needed, and the whole team deserved it so much. All this time putting so much work into bringing this new package and finally seeing the result is very pleasant.”
Mercedes introduced a significant aerodynamic upgrade package at the Sepang International Circuit earlier in the 2026 season.
The upgrades focused on improving high-speed and medium-speed cornering performance. Antonelli noted that low-speed front locking issues persist in some areas.
Leclerc reflected on his race and the car’s performance.
“I enjoyed it. The start was fun, then later on with Lando and Max again was quite fun. It’s one of those races where you’re not getting too bored inside the cockpit.”
Verstappen expressed his frustration with the race outcome.
“Pretty frustrating, to be honest. Just not a really good race for us. In hindsight, of course, it’s very easy to say, but for whatever reason, the softer compounds today were not really working that well.”
Verstappen also highlighted ongoing radio communication issues. He stated this has been a recurring problem throughout the season.
