Andrea Kimi Antonelli currently leads the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas, holding a significant advantage over the chasing pack. The Mercedes driver, starting from pole position, is contesting Round 18 of the 2026 Formula 1 season in Austin, Texas. Max Verstappen, who began alongside Antonelli on the front row, lost positions at the start of the race.

Antonelli’s strong start saw him pull away cleanly at Turn 1, while Verstappen conceded to Charles Leclerc and narrowly defended against Lewis Hamilton. The Dutchman has since recovered to second place.

The 20-year-old Italian is on the verge of securing his maiden Formula 1 World Championship. He entered the United States Grand Prix with a 102-point lead over Mercedes teammate George Russell in the Drivers’ Standings.

To clinch the title in Austin, Antonelli must win the Grand Prix. Additionally, George Russell needs to finish ninth or lower, and Lewis Hamilton must cross the line in fifth position or lower.

The starting grid for the 2026 United States Grand Prix saw Antonelli on pole with a lap time of 1:34.035. Max Verstappen qualified second, followed by Isack Hadjar in third. Charles Leclerc started fourth, with Lewis Hamilton fifth and George Russell sixth.

Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris occupied the fourth row, starting seventh and eighth respectively. Liam Lawson and Pierre Gasly completed the top ten on the provisional grid.

Several drivers incurred grid penalties before the race. Arvid Lindblad received a five-place penalty for using an additional power unit element, dropping him to 14th. Franco Colapinto was handed a ten-place penalty for a fourth control electronics unit, placing him 20th. Gabriel Bortoleto started from the back of the grid due to a 60-place penalty for multiple power unit component changes. Lance Stroll commenced the race from the pit lane after Aston Martin made set-up changes and replaced his power unit and battery.

At the start, Antonelli was on medium compound tyres, as was his teammate Russell. The Red Bull drivers, Verstappen and Hadjar, along with Ferrari’s Leclerc and Hamilton, opted for soft tyres.

Early in the race, a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) was deployed due to debris on the track at Turn 11. George Russell also received a five-second time penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage.

The Circuit of the Americas (COTA) is a 5.513-kilometer track featuring 20 corners. It is known for its dramatic 40-meter elevation change to Turn 1, which provides a key overtaking opportunity at the start.

The circuit’s layout includes a fast and flowing first sector, reminiscent of Silverstone’s Maggotts and Becketts, followed by a long back straight with a DRS zone. The final sector incorporates a tight, twisting stadium section, influenced by Hockenheim.

COTA is considered demanding on both brakes and tyres due to its varied corner types and undulating surface. The United States Grand Prix marks the beginning of a triple-header, with races in Mexico and Brazil scheduled in the coming weeks.

As the race progresses, Antonelli has extended his lead to 2.9 seconds. The current top ten includes Antonelli, Verstappen, Leclerc, Hamilton, Hadjar, Russell, Piastri, and Norris.
