Kimi Antonelli starts the United States Grand Prix from pole position today, Sunday, October 25, 2026, with the opportunity to secure his first Formula 1 World Championship title. The Mercedes driver leads the standings with 340 points, holding a 102-point advantage over teammate George Russell and 111 points over Lewis Hamilton.

Antonelli, at 20 years old, could become the youngest F1 World Champion in history. To clinch the title at the Circuit of the Americas, he must win the race, while Russell finishes outside the top eight and Hamilton finishes outside the top four.

The United States Grand Prix marks Round 18 of the 2026 FIA Formula One World Championship. Antonelli secured his seventh pole position of the season during qualifying on Saturday, October 24, outpacing Max Verstappen by 0.179 seconds.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff acknowledged that Antonelli’s pole position exceeded the team’s expectations for the session. The team has been working to optimize recent car upgrades.

Should Antonelli succeed, he would become the tenth driver to secure a Formula 1 World Championship on American soil. This tradition dates back to the inaugural United States Grand Prix in 1959.

Jack Brabham was the first to achieve this feat at Sebring in 1959. Despite running out of fuel a mile from the finish, Brabham pushed his Cooper car across the line to take fourth place, securing his first championship.

In 1970, Jochen Rindt was posthumously crowned World Champion at Watkins Glen. His five victories earlier in the season were sufficient after a fatal crash at Monza. Jacky Ickx’s fourth-place finish at the US Grand Prix confirmed Rindt’s title.

Emerson Fittipaldi claimed his second championship at Watkins Glen in 1974. Entering the season finale level on points with Clay Regazzoni, Fittipaldi’s fourth-place finish secured the title for McLaren. The race was marred by the fatal accident of Helmuth Koinigg.

Niki Lauda secured his second World Championship at Watkins Glen in 1977, two races before the season concluded. A fourth-place finish was enough for Lauda, who had made a comeback after his severe 1976 Nürburgring injuries.

The Caesars Palace Grand Prix in Las Vegas saw Nelson Piquet clinch his first title in 1981. Piquet finished fifth, one point ahead of Carlos Reutemann, who started on pole but finished eighth. Piquet suffered from heat exhaustion after the race.

Keke Rosberg followed in 1982 at the same Caesars Palace circuit, securing his championship with a fifth-place finish. Rosberg became the first driver since Mike Hawthorn in 1958 to win the title with only one race victory in his championship season.

Lewis Hamilton has twice clinched the World Championship at the Circuit of the Americas. In 2015, he secured his third title with three races remaining by winning the United States Grand Prix. In 2019, a second-place finish was sufficient for his sixth championship.

Most recently, Max Verstappen secured his fourth consecutive World Championship at the Las Vegas Grand Prix in 2024. A fifth-place finish was enough for Verstappen to seal the title.
