Kimi Antonelli secured pole position for the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas, placing him in contention for the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship title. The Mercedes driver achieved a lap time of 1:34.035 during Saturday’s qualifying session in Austin, Texas. This marks his seventh pole position of the current season.

Lewis Hamilton, now driving for Ferrari, offered a light-hearted remark to Antonelli ahead of Sunday’s race. Hamilton jokingly advised the young Italian to “slow down” as he approaches a potential championship victory.

Antonelli currently leads the Drivers’ Championship with 340 points. He holds a 102-point advantage over his Mercedes teammate George Russell, who has 238 points. Hamilton is nine points further back with 229 points.

To clinch the title at the United States Grand Prix, Antonelli must win the race. This scenario also requires Russell to finish ninth or lower, and Hamilton to finish fifth or lower.

Should Antonelli secure the championship today, he would become the youngest Formula 1 World Champion in history. This achievement would surpass Sebastian Vettel’s record.

Antonelli has demonstrated strong performance throughout the 2026 season, securing eight Grand Prix victories. His consistent results have positioned him firmly at the top of the standings with five races remaining after Austin.

Hamilton praised Antonelli’s talent, composure, and overall approach to racing. He noted Antonelli’s impressive performance in both the current and previous seasons.

Hamilton moved to Ferrari in 2025, with Antonelli subsequently joining Mercedes as his replacement. Hamilton stated he was aware of Antonelli’s potential to fill his seat.

During Friday’s practice sessions, Ferrari showed strong pace, with Charles Leclerc topping FP1 and FP2. Hamilton himself led FP3.

However, Ferrari’s qualifying performance saw Hamilton secure fifth place, behind Leclerc in fourth. Hamilton attributed this to a “significant” power deficit on the straights compared to Mercedes and Red Bull.

Ferrari introduced an aero upgrade package for the United States Grand Prix. These updates focused on increasing floor downforce at both the front and rear of the car.

In a separate incident during FP3, Gabriel Bortoleto received a warning from the FIA stewards. The Audi driver was found to have unnecessarily impeded Hamilton at Turn 12, forcing the Ferrari driver to abandon a flying lap.

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff expressed surprise at Antonelli’s pole position. Wolff admitted that the result exceeded the team’s expectations for qualifying.

Russell, Antonelli’s teammate, qualified sixth for the race. His 2026 season began with a victory at the Australian Grand Prix.

Despite the early success, Russell’s championship aspirations have diminished as Antonelli established a commanding lead. Russell has acknowledged a challenging season, citing both misfortune and his own performance.

The starting grid for the United States Grand Prix sees Antonelli on pole, followed by Max Verstappen in second for Red Bull. Isack Hadjar qualified third, also for Red Bull.

Charles Leclerc starts fourth, with Lewis Hamilton fifth. George Russell will begin the race from sixth position.
