George Russell has detailed the internal pressures experienced during his 2026 Formula 1 championship campaign against Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli. The current United States Grand Prix weekend at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, presents Antonelli with his first mathematical opportunity to secure the World Championship.
Russell must finish ninth or lower if Antonelli wins Sunday’s race for the title fight to extend to the upcoming Mexican Grand Prix. Antonelli currently holds a 102-point lead over Russell in the Drivers’ Championship standings, with 340 points to Russell’s 238, after 17 rounds of the season.
Russell reflected on his mentality throughout the season, noting fluctuations in his view of the championship. He stated that early in the year, a significant points deficit led to concerns over his own performance.
“In terms of my mentality this season, my view of the championship has been up and down. I think early in the year when I had a big point deficit, the thing that was keeping me up at night was my lack of performance and thinking like, how am I going to improve my performance? What do I need from a car? What does the car need from my driving, rather than my opportunity maybe going amiss?”
Antonelli has demonstrated strong form throughout the 2026 season, securing eight victories. His wins include the Chinese Grand Prix, where he became the youngest polesitter in F1 history, and the Japanese Grand Prix, after which he became the youngest driver to lead the F1 Drivers’ Championship.
The Italian driver also claimed victories in Miami, Canada, Monaco, and Belgium. His five-race winning streak from China to Monaco was interrupted by a reliability issue in Barcelona.
Antonelli further extended his lead with back-to-back wins at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza and the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid. At Monza, he achieved a notable victory from 19th on the grid despite an engine penalty, becoming the first Italian driver to win his home Grand Prix since 1966.
Russell’s season has included three victories: the Australian, Austrian, and Azerbaijan Grands Prix. His win at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where he started from pole position, reduced Antonelli’s championship lead to 66 points at that time.
However, Russell’s title aspirations faced setbacks, including a 40-place grid penalty at the Singapore Grand Prix. This penalty, incurred due to multiple power unit component changes following a retirement at the Bahrain Grand Prix, forced him to start from the back of the grid.
Mercedes has also postponed the introduction of its upgraded ADUO engine package, which could lead to further grid penalties for Russell if additional power unit components are required before the upgrade is ready. The São Paulo Grand Prix in November is currently the earliest realistic opportunity for the new specification.
Russell acknowledged that while some factors were beyond his control, his own performance has not consistently met his capabilities. He views the season as a test of character and resilience, aiming to learn from the challenges to become a better driver.
The 2026 Formula 1 season, which introduced a major overhaul of technical regulations, has seen Mercedes emerge as a leading contender. Six rounds remain in the championship, with a maximum of 150 points still available.
The Mexican Grand Prix, scheduled from October 30 to November 1, will follow the United States Grand Prix.
