George Russell has stated that the 2026 Formula 1 season has significantly challenged his character and resilience. His comments were made after Free Practice 2 at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas. Russell’s Mercedes teammate, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, is currently in a position to secure the Drivers’ Championship title this weekend.

Russell began the 2026 campaign as the pre-season favourite, securing a victory at the opening Australian Grand Prix. Mercedes had developed a strong power unit under the new regulations, which initially provided a performance advantage.

However, the season’s trajectory shifted from the second race in China. A car issue in Q3 opened the door for Antonelli to take pole position. Since then, Antonelli has secured eight Grand Prix victories.

Russell, by contrast, has recorded only three wins in 2026, including his Australian triumph. His season has been affected by a series of reliability problems and performance inconsistencies.

Reliability issues have cost Russell an estimated 56 championship points. These include a battery failure in Canada and a power unit failure in Sepang, Malaysia, where he retired from third place.

Further setbacks involved a water leak and anti-stall problems in Hungary, and gearbox issues in China and Japan. A start-line deployment problem at Spa also led to a collision and retirement.

Russell also incurred grid penalties at the Singapore Grand Prix due to exceeding his allocation of power unit components. Mercedes has delayed an upgraded power unit, initially planned for the American rounds.

This delay complicates Russell’s strategy for managing component usage and avoiding further penalties. The FIA’s ADUO system allowed Mercedes to develop its engine due to a performance deficit.

Antonelli currently leads the Drivers’ Championship with 340 points, holding a 102-point advantage over Russell, who has 238 points. Mercedes leads the Constructors’ Championship.

Antonelli, in his second F1 season, became the youngest polesitter in China and the youngest World Drivers’ Championship leader in Japan. He also won his home Grand Prix in Italy from 19th on the grid.

The 2026 regulations introduced a new power unit configuration with a 50/50 internal combustion to electronic power split. Cars are also lighter, with active aerodynamics and an ‘Overtake Mode’.

During Free Practice 2 for the United States Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc set the fastest time. Antonelli finished second, with Max Verstappen third. Russell placed fifth in the session.

Russell acknowledged that his performance earlier in the season was not at the level he expected. He stated his focus was on improving his driving and car setup.

It has been a very unique season, it has been a season where it’s tested my character and resilience a lot.

Russell expressed pride in his consistent effort to fight back from setbacks. He maintains his commitment to competing for victories in the future.
