Formula 1 is set to debut at the new Madring circuit in Madrid for the Spanish Grand Prix next weekend. Pirelli, the sport’s sole tyre supplier, initiated its preparation for this event three years ago, anticipating the technical demands of the new 5.416-kilometre venue.

The Madring circuit, an urban layout incorporating both street sections and purpose-built track, features 20 corners. This design presents a complex challenge for tyre development, requiring a versatile compound selection.

Pirelli’s extensive lead time, beginning in 2023, allowed for comprehensive simulation work. This process involved utilizing detailed CAD data and track simulations provided by the circuit designers and the FIA.

The diverse characteristics of the Madring track, including significant elevation changes and varied corner types, necessitate tyres capable of performing across a broad spectrum of conditions. Balancing durability with outright performance is crucial.

Mario Isola, Pirelli’s Motorsport Director, has previously emphasized the critical role of data analysis for new circuits. Real-world testing is absent, making simulation accuracy paramount for tyre compound selection.

The urban nature of the circuit also implies lower initial grip levels. Pirelli must therefore provide compounds that can achieve optimal operating temperature quickly, ensuring immediate performance for the teams.

For the 2026 season, Pirelli continues to refine its tyre compounds. The specific selections for the Spanish Grand Prix at Madring will be tailored to meet these unique track requirements.

The Spanish Grand Prix, scheduled for September 18-20, 2026, marks the debut of the Madring circuit on the Formula 1 calendar. This event is part of a contract running until 2035.
