Williams Racing has announced Alex Albon will remain with the team for the 2027 Formula 1 season. The new agreement extends his tenure with the Grove-based outfit, securing his position for a sixth consecutive year. This development was confirmed on Tuesday, August 18, 2026.

The extension is a one-year deal, ensuring Albon continues his role beyond the current 2026 campaign. He originally joined Williams in 2022, following a year on the sidelines after his departure from the Red Bull stable.

Albon has expressed his commitment to the team’s ongoing project. He noted the transformation Williams has undergone since 2022, stating that a single challenging year does not represent the full picture.

He added that the current difficulties provide further motivation to continue building and pushing with the factory and fans. Albon’s focus remains on improving the team’s grid position.

Team Principal James Vowles conveyed his satisfaction with Albon’s continued faith in the team. Vowles highlighted Albon’s leadership in the transformation project since its inception.

Vowles stated that Albon is among the grid’s top drivers and understands the improvements made in recent years. The re-signing demonstrates mutual belief in the team’s direction.

Williams has experienced a challenging 2026 season, currently holding ninth position in the Constructors’ Championship with 11 points. This marks a decline from their fifth-place finish in 2025.

The FW48 car has been affected by an overweight chassis and various technical issues. The team missed the pre-season Barcelona Shakedown, impacting their early development.

Drivers have reported significant aero balance problems and a general lack of downforce throughout the current season. This has contributed to the team’s struggles.

Albon’s individual performance in 2026 includes one points finish, an eighth-place result at the Monaco Grand Prix. He has also recorded two eleventh-place finishes.

Earlier this season, Albon became Williams’ most tenured driver, surpassing Nigel Mansell. He also completed his 100th Grand Prix start for the team at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Williams continues its long-standing partnership with Mercedes-Benz, which will supply power units from the 2026 season onwards. This agreement extends a relationship initiated in 2014.

The 2026 power unit regulations mandate the use of 100% sustainable fuel and feature upgraded electrical systems for increased performance.

Carlos Sainz is Albon’s teammate for the 2026 season. Sainz has secured points on three occasions this year.

Reports indicate that Sainz is also nearing a new contract agreement with Williams, with an announcement anticipated before the Dutch Grand Prix weekend.

Vowles has confirmed that significant upgrades for the FW48 are planned for introduction after the summer break. The team aims to improve its competitive standing.
