Williams Team Principal James Vowles has confirmed his concern regarding the potential departure of drivers Carlos Sainz and Alexander Albon. Both drivers recently committed to new contracts with the team, with Albon extending for a single year into 2027 and Sainz signing a multi-year agreement.
The previous contracts for both drivers were set to conclude at the end of the current season. Vowles had presented a vision of significant progress for Williams under Formula 1’s new 2026 regulations, aiming for a substantial performance leap.
However, the team encountered production delays with its 2026 challenger, the FW48. The car arrived at pre-season testing overweight and with an underperforming chassis, subsequently struggling to contend for championship points during the initial phase of the season.
Williams currently occupies ninth position in the Constructors’ Championship as of August 2026, having secured only a limited number of points. The FW48 chassis has been noted for significant aerodynamic inefficiencies, contributing to its lack of competitive pace.
The introduction of the new 2026 technical regulations, which include active aerodynamics and a revised power unit architecture, presented a considerable development challenge for all teams. Williams faced particular difficulties with resource allocation and initial design concepts for the new era.
‘I was concerned about losing both because they are world championship-material drivers that deserve the opportunity to be fighting for podiums or more, and we haven’t delivered that,’ Vowles stated on Friday at the Dutch Grand Prix. ‘For us to move backwards this year isn’t just a surprise to the drivers, it’s a surprise to everyone. And that will always create the risk that we could lose them.’
Despite the team’s performance setbacks, both Sainz and Albon demonstrated commitment. Vowles noted their proactive engagement, including visits to the factory to support the organisation rather than assigning blame.
Carlos Sainz’s new multi-year deal reportedly extends his tenure with Williams through the 2028 season, aligning with the stability period of the current regulatory cycle. Alexander Albon’s one-year extension for 2027 offers both the driver and the team flexibility, potentially pending further performance developments.
Vowles views the re-signing of both drivers as a significant endorsement of his long-term strategy to elevate Williams’ standing in the sport. He highlighted substantial infrastructure upgrades at the Grove factory over the past 18 months as a key factor in convincing the drivers of the team’s future potential.
The retention of Sainz and Albon has reportedly provided a tangible boost in morale and stability within the factory. Vowles observed a noticeable increase in the pace of work and belief among team members following the contract announcements.
