Günther Steiner has expressed surprise regarding the significant transfer of personnel from Mercedes to Red Bull. Steiner indicated that Red Bull’s proposals to attract staff must have been substantial. His comments reflect on the ongoing movement of key individuals within Formula 1 teams.

While the original report referenced a ‘Wolff confidant’ specifically, the broader context involves a notable exodus of engineering talent. This movement has primarily affected Mercedes High Performance Powertrains (HPP) staff. These individuals have transitioned to Red Bull Powertrains.

Christian Horner, former Red Bull Team Principal, previously stated in 2024 that over 200 Mercedes personnel had been recruited. This large-scale recruitment was aimed at bolstering Red Bull’s engine division. The transfers were crucial for their 2026 power unit project.

The strategic importance of these personnel shifts is directly linked to the new 2026 Formula 1 regulations. These rules introduce a revised power unit formula. Teams are actively strengthening their technical departments for this upcoming era.

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff acknowledged Red Bull Powertrains’ efforts. He stated that Red Bull had done a ‘good job’ in establishing their engine operation. Wolff’s remarks followed early assessments of the new power units.

Recent FIA Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) findings have positioned the Red Bull Powertrains internal combustion engine as the benchmark. This assessment provides an early indication of performance ahead of the 2026 season.

Mercedes’ power unit was ranked second in these initial ADUO findings. Consequently, Mercedes is set to receive at least one additional upgrade opportunity. Ferrari, Audi, and Honda were granted two upgrade opportunities.

In related technical movements, Loic Serra, formerly Mercedes’ Performance Director, joined Ferrari as Chassis Technical Director. Serra commenced his role at Ferrari on October 1, 2024. He is now integral to Ferrari’s 2026 car development.
