Carlos Sainz has clarified recent speculation regarding a potential move to Audi, confirming that he never seriously considered leaving Williams for the 2027 Formula 1 season. The Spaniard dismissed the persistent talks as ‘paddock rumours’ following his recent multi-year contract extension with the Grove-based outfit.

The new agreement with Williams was announced on August 19, 2026, ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix. This commitment secures Sainz’s future with the team for 2027 and beyond, completing Williams’ driver line-up alongside Alex Albon.

Sainz joined Williams in 2025 after his departure from Ferrari. His inaugural season with the team proved successful, yielding podium finishes in Baku and Qatar, along with a Sprint rostrum in Austin. Williams concluded the 2025 Constructors’ Championship in fifth position.

However, the current 2026 season has presented significant challenges for Williams. The team has struggled with performance, currently holding ninth place in the Constructors’ standings with 11 points. Sainz himself sits 16th in the Drivers’ Championship with six points after 11 rounds.

Despite the team’s difficulties, Sainz stated his loyalty to the project. He emphasised that it is not in his character to abandon a team during a challenging period, reiterating his belief in Williams’ long-term vision.

Williams Team Principal James Vowles has praised Sainz’s dedication and leadership. Vowles highlighted Sainz’s consistent approach, regardless of whether he is competing for a podium or a lower position, calling it a ‘unique’ trait.

Audi officially entered Formula 1 as a constructor and power unit manufacturer in 2026, operating as the Audi Revolut F1 Team through the acquisition of Sauber Motorsport. Their current driver pairing consists of Nico Hülkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto.

Mattia Binotto, CEO and Team Principal of Audi, acknowledged the rumours linking Sainz to their project. Binotto noted that such interest validates Audi’s direction but confirmed satisfaction with their existing driver line-up.

Williams’ 2026 struggles stem from an overweight and underdeveloped car, with the team missing the pre-season shakedown. Their planned ‘race one’ package was not introduced until the fourth round in Miami.

Sainz remains committed to helping Williams navigate its current performance setback. He believes in the team’s personnel and the ongoing investments aimed at improving their competitive standing.
