Triple Eight Race Engineering, operating the Red Bull Ampol Racing entry in the Supercars championship, has identified a significant technical discrepancy. The team discovered an undersized engine airflow restrictor on Will Brown’s #888 Ford Mustang.

The component was found to be one millimetre smaller than the mandated size for the Ford Mustang. This specific part controls the airflow into the engine, directly influencing horsepower output and overall lap times.

This discrepancy has reportedly hampered Brown’s performance throughout the 2026 Supercars season. The 2024 champion currently sits seventh in the championship standings.

Team Principal Jamie Whincup stated the issue was a key factor behind Brown’s struggles with pace. The undersized restrictor is estimated to have cost the car approximately 0.15 seconds per lap.

The restrictor is a controlled component supplied by Supercars, not manufactured by Triple Eight. It was initially loaned to the team for demonstration purposes at their February 2026 season launch.

Supercars acknowledged that the part inadvertently remained fitted to Brown’s car through the Perth Super440 event. Neither party identified the discrepancy until Triple Eight’s discovery.

Routine scrutineering and compliance checks by Supercars’ technical department had not selected the restrictor on Brown’s car for inspection prior to the Perth event.

Jamie Whincup issued a statement, taking responsibility for the oversight and apologising to stakeholders. He confirmed the team would address the supply of the out-of-specification component with Supercars.

“At 7pm last night, we found a significant issue on Car #888. Since the start of this season, Car #888 has been running with an undersized engine airflow restrictor.”

Supercars has acknowledged the finding and is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the matter. The series plans to evaluate opportunities to strengthen its technical and operational procedures.

Brown will switch to a spare chassis equipped with the correct airflow restrictor for the upcoming Century Batteries Ipswich Super 440 finale. This event is scheduled for August 21-23.

The incident highlights vulnerabilities in operational procedures and the critical importance of strict compliance with technical regulations in motorsport.
