Nikola Tsolov, a prominent member of the Red Bull Junior Team, has publicly acknowledged the enduring impact of advice received from two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso. Tsolov, currently competing in his first full FIA Formula 2 season, attributes part of his current success to this guidance.
The Bulgarian driver, nicknamed ‘the Bulgarian Lion’, is presently leading the 2026 FIA Formula 2 Championship standings. He has secured six victories this season, positioning him close to establishing a new record for the most F2 wins in a single campaign.
Alonso’s specific counsel, which Tsolov states he has ‘never forgotten’, focused on maximizing race results. The advice was: ‘If your car is good enough to finish third, you have to cross the line in second. You don’t have to finish fifth.’
This philosophy underscores a pragmatic approach to race management and performance extraction, a trait often associated with Alonso’s own career. Tsolov’s current championship lead stands at 27 points as of July 22, 2026.
Alonso’s involvement with Tsolov began during the latter’s karting career. Tsolov was among the initial drivers to join Alonso’s A14 Management programme, which aimed to guide young talents through the motorsport ladder.
The relationship continued as Tsolov transitioned into single-seater racing, including his debut in the F4 Spanish Championship. He secured the F4 Spanish title in his rookie season in 2022.
However, Tsolov is no longer affiliated with A14 Management. He joined the Red Bull Junior Team in 2025, and reports indicate the separation from Alonso’s management was not amicable.
Red Bull now oversees Tsolov’s career progression. His strong performances in F2 have drawn attention from the Red Bull Formula 1 teams.
Racing Bulls team principal Alan Permane recently indicated that Tsolov is ‘next in line’ for a potential Formula 1 seat. This statement follows earlier speculation regarding a guaranteed 2027 seat, which the team subsequently denied.
To qualify for a Formula 1 Super Licence, Tsolov must finish within the top five of the F2 standings. His current championship position places him firmly on track to achieve this requirement.
Prior to his F2 debut in late 2025, Tsolov was the runner-up in the 2025 FIA Formula 3 Championship. He also holds the record for the most wins in FIA Formula 3 history, with five victories.
