Oscar Piastri was issued a 10-second time penalty following the Mexico City Grand Prix. The McLaren driver was deemed responsible for a collision with Racing Bulls driver Arvid Lindblad. This penalty dropped Piastri from his seventh-place finish to 15th in the final classification.
The incident occurred during the closing stages of the race at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. Piastri had started from 12th position after a Q2 exit in qualifying. He made early progress, gaining three places on the opening lap.
The race was interrupted on Lap 45 by a significant crash involving Cadillac driver Valtteri Bottas. Bottas’s front-left suspension failed, sending his car into the Turn 1 barriers. This incident necessitated a red flag for barrier repairs.
Following the standing restart, Lindblad, the sole rookie on the 2026 grid, overtook Piastri. Piastri then spent 12 laps behind Lindblad before attempting a pass. On Lap 59, Piastri tried to move around the outside of Turn 1.
Lindblad maintained his line, leading to contact between Piastri’s front tyre and Lindblad’s left rear. The collision sent Lindblad’s Racing Bulls car into the wall. Lindblad emerged from the incident without injury.
Piastri stated he initially attempted an inside move, but Lindblad’s late defensive action forced him wide. He then tried to complete the overtake from the outside. Piastri indicated he was attempting to concede the position.
“I tried to go up the inside actually, and then he shut the door very, very late. So I had to kind of avoid him and end up on the outside. I tried from there, and obviously he pushed me pretty wide, and at that point I knew I was not going to completely overtake. So I was trying to get out, but he pushed me so far wide that I couldn’t go any further left, and we just interlocked wheels, and that was the end result, of course.”
The FIA stewards reviewed video evidence and driver statements. They determined Piastri was never fully alongside Lindblad to claim the corner. The stewards concluded Piastri could have avoided the collision.
Their verdict specified that Piastri should have moved further left after Turn 1. This action would have prevented the contact, even if it meant leaving the track. The penalty resulted in Piastri scoring no points in Mexico.
As a direct consequence of Piastri’s penalty, Audi driver Gabriel Bortoleto was promoted to 10th position. This awarded Bortoleto a championship point.
Arvid Lindblad joined Racing Bulls for the 2026 season. His signing was confirmed on December 2, 2025. Lindblad is a Red Bull junior programme graduate.
Piastri’s McLaren MCL40 sustained significant sidepod and bargeboard damage in the collision. This incident extends Piastri’s current streak without a podium finish to 15 races.
McLaren has experienced a challenging 2026 season under new regulations. The team faced a double retirement in China earlier in the year. McLaren’s focus is now shifting towards 2027 development.
