Laurent Mekies, Team Principal of Oracle Red Bull Racing, has expressed confidence in the team’s 2026 power unit project, acknowledging the significant challenges faced during the current Formula 1 season. Mekies highlighted the long-term benefits of Red Bull’s approach to developing its own power unit.
Mekies assumed the role of CEO and Team Principal for Oracle Red Bull Racing in July 2025, succeeding Christian Horner. His tenure began with a focus on a strong finish to the 2025 season.
Red Bull is developing its inaugural power unit, Red Bull Ford Powertrains, for the 2026 technical regulations. This initiative marks the first time the team will produce both chassis and power units in-house.
Mekies has openly described the undertaking as ‘as crazy as it gets’ and an ‘unbelievable challenge’. He anticipates initial struggles for the new power unit project.
The team principal noted that it would be ‘very naive’ to expect the new power unit to match established manufacturers in its debut season. Red Bull Ford Powertrains is based at the Milton Keynes factory.
Despite the current difficulties, Mekies maintains that the aggressive late development of the 2025 car was a necessary investment. This strategy aimed to understand limitations and validate methodologies for 2026.
He stated that this approach provides ‘a lot more confidence into tools, methodologies, approaches going into 2026’. This decision, however, has impacted the team’s start to the 2026 season.
Oracle Red Bull Racing currently sits fourth in the 2026 Constructors’ Championship. Max Verstappen, the team’s lead driver, is seventh in the Drivers’ standings.
Verstappen’s contract with Red Bull extends until the end of 2028, though performance-based exit clauses are widely understood to exist. Speculation regarding his future has intensified.
Mekies recently addressed the driver market, confirming that ‘many good drivers’ are contacting Red Bull to express interest in a seat.
He affirmed that Red Bull Racing’s sole objective remains winning. Mekies expressed confidence in the team’s capacity to overcome its current challenges, referencing their significant turnaround in 2025.
