Max Verstappen secured his sixth victory at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez during the Mexican Grand Prix on Sunday, November 1, 2026. The race also saw Andrea Kimi Antonelli clinch the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship with a third-place finish. However, the event was overshadowed by a controversial five-second penalty issued to Charles Leclerc following an opening-lap incident with teammate Lewis Hamilton.

The incident occurred at Turn 4 on the first lap. Hamilton, starting from pole position, was challenged by Leclerc. Leclerc attempted an overtake around the outside, resulting in both Ferrari drivers running wide due to excessive entry speed.

Leclerc cut across the grass and rejoined the track ahead of Hamilton. Hamilton also ran wide, losing momentum and subsequently dropping behind Verstappen, who capitalized on the Ferrari drivers’ battle.

Hamilton immediately voiced his frustration over team radio, stating, “Got pushed out by my own teammate.” He later added, “The stewards are basically handing Charles this win. We agreed, drivers’ briefing.”

The FIA stewards investigated the incident and issued Leclerc a five-second time penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage. This penalty was notably less than the standard 10-second sanction often applied for such infringements.

The stewards’ decision cited mitigating circumstances, explaining that “both cars entered Turn 4 with excessive speed and therefore neither would have been able to make the corner on track, as demonstrated by the fact that car 44 which was on the inside, had to go off track to make the corner.”

Verstappen questioned the leniency of the penalty, remarking, “Normally, that penalty is 10 seconds, and now suddenly it’s five. I find that very strange too.”

Leclerc acknowledged that the penalty was “deserved in a way.” He explained that the situation was confusing as both cars went off, and Verstappen’s presence complicated his decision to yield the position.

Ferrari Team Principal Fred Vasseur expressed significant disappointment regarding the incident. He described it as a “lack of respect” for the team and its efforts, finding it “difficult to digest” the loss of a potential victory.

The stewards’ reasoning for the reduced penalty, specifically the mitigating circumstance involving Hamilton also running wide, mirrored commentary from Sky Sports F1 analyst Nico Rosberg. Rosberg initially defended Leclerc’s move before concluding a five-second penalty was appropriate, partly due to Hamilton’s own track excursion.

The Mexican Grand Prix was marked by further incidents, including a red flag for Valtteri Bottas’s heavy crash and a late Safety Car period after Arvid Lindblad’s collision.

George Russell received a 10-second penalty for causing a collision with Isack Hadjar. Post-race penalties also affected Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly, who lost points, while Oscar Piastri received a 10-second penalty.

The final adjusted results for the 2026 Mexican Grand Prix saw Max Verstappen in first, Lewis Hamilton in second, and Andrea Kimi Antonelli in third. Charles Leclerc finished fourth, followed by Lando Norris in fifth, and George Russell in sixth.

Liam Lawson secured seventh place, with Gabriel Bortoleto eighth, Isack Hadjar ninth, and Ryo Hirakawa scoring a point on his debut in tenth.
