Carlos Sainz has committed his Formula 1 future to Williams, signing a new multi-year contract that extends his tenure through at least the 2027 season. The announcement, made on August 19, 2026, followed Alex Albon’s contract extension by one day, solidifying Williams’ driver lineup for the upcoming years. Sainz’s decision comes despite a challenging 2026 campaign for the Grove-based outfit.

Sainz initially joined Williams in 2025 after his departure from Ferrari. His debut season proved successful, yielding two Grand Prix podiums in Baku and Qatar, alongside a Sprint podium in Austin. These results contributed to Williams’ strongest performance since 2016, with the team securing fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship.

However, the current 2026 season has presented difficulties for Williams, with Sainz accumulating only six points across 11 rounds by August. This period of underperformance led to questions regarding Sainz’s long-term commitment. Past frustrations, including public discontent over team orders and operational issues during the 2025 Miami Grand Prix, had also tested his confidence.

Team Principal James Vowles played a central role in securing Sainz’s continued involvement. Vowles engaged in direct, honest discussions with the Spanish driver, providing reassurances regarding the team’s internal issues and outlining a clear path forward. Sainz’s renewed commitment reflects his belief in Vowles’ leadership and the ongoing investments behind the scenes.

Williams has demonstrated significant financial backing for its long-term rebuild project. The team reported record revenues of $324 million in its 2025 accounts, marking a 35.7% increase year-over-year. Over $45 million was allocated to factory, hardware, and facility upgrades during 2025.

Furthermore, Williams received a capital expenditure allowance of $65 million in 2025, exceeding that of top teams like Red Bull, Mercedes, and Ferrari by $14 million. This additional funding is considered crucial for the team’s recovery efforts. Williams is also receiving prize money consistent with its fifth-place finish in the 2025 Constructors’ Championship, expecting approximately $107 million in 2026.

The team has strategically shifted its primary development resources towards the 2027 regulations, accepting a performance compromise for the remainder of the 2026 season. Significant aerodynamic changes are mandated for 2027, impacting areas such as the bib, rear wing, and floor. Williams will continue its long-standing partnership with Mercedes for power unit supply from 2026.

Power unit regulations are also set for adjustments in 2027, with the internal combustion-to-electrical power ratio moving from a 50/50 split to 58/42 in favour of internal combustion. This ratio will further shift to 60/40 from 2028. Vowles believes these regulatory interventions create new opportunities for manufacturers and can disrupt the existing hierarchy.

Sainz’s multi-year agreement is reported to extend through 2028 and includes a provision for an escape clause should a top team offer a future opportunity. This deal positions Sainz among the highest-paid drivers on the grid, securing a formidable and experienced lineup for Williams alongside Albon.
