The Cadillac Formula 1 team has announced Marcin Budkowski as its new team principal, effective immediately. This leadership change occurs during the team’s inaugural 2026 Formula 1 season. Budkowski replaces Graeme Lowdon, who assisted the team in its initial integration into the sport.
A Cadillac statement indicated this appointment strengthens the organisation’s leadership. It is described as a planned transition as the team moves from its build phase to focusing on racing performance. Budkowski brings over two decades of Formula 1 experience to the role.
Cadillac’s entry into Formula 1 for the 2026 season followed a protracted approval process. The American manufacturer, backed by General Motors, initially faced significant resistance from Formula 1 management and existing teams.
The FIA had approved the bid, then led by Michael Andretti, in October 2023. However, Formula 1 initially rejected the application in January 2024. Concerns were raised regarding the team’s potential competitiveness and the value it would add to the championship.
The project subsequently evolved, with Michael Andretti stepping back from a primary leadership position. The focus shifted towards a factory-backed Cadillac entry, emphasising General Motors’ substantial financial and technical commitment.
This revised approach eventually secured final approval from both the FIA and Formula 1 in March 2025. Cadillac officially became the 11th team on the grid for the 2026 season.
The team operates with bases in the United States, including Fishers, Indiana, and Concord, North Carolina, alongside a British facility in Silverstone. Cadillac is currently utilising Ferrari power units.
General Motors plans to develop its own F1 power unit by the end of the decade, potentially by 2028 or 2029. This long-term commitment was a key factor in the eventual approval of their entry.
Cadillac’s driver lineup for its debut season features experienced campaigners Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas. Mario Andretti also serves on the team’s board.
The mid-season leadership change underscores the ongoing development within the sport’s newest entrant. Cadillac aims to establish itself competitively in Formula 1.
