Fernando Alonso, a two-time Formula 1 World Champion, is reportedly preparing for a return to the Dakar Rally in January 2027. This move would see the Spaniard re-enter one of motorsport’s most demanding off-road endurance events.
Reports indicate Alonso has agreed to a deal to compete in the iconic cross-country raid. This follows his contract extension with Aston Martin in Formula 1, which secures his position with the team through the 2027 season.
The timing of the Dakar Rally, held annually in Saudi Arabia during January, aligns with the Formula 1 calendar. The 24-race F1 season typically commences in March, providing Alonso a window for this off-road venture.
This arrangement allows Alonso to represent the Aston Martin brand across two distinct top-level motorsport disciplines concurrently. His participation would bridge his Grand Prix commitments with a high-stakes off-road challenge.
Alonso is expected to reunite with Dakar legend Marc Coma as his co-driver. Coma, a five-time Dakar Rally winner in the motorcycle category, previously partnered with Alonso during his debut in the event.
Their previous collaboration in 2020 saw Alonso compete in a Toyota Hilux. Despite a series of setbacks, including a significant rollover on Stage 10 that cost considerable time, he finished 13th overall.
During his 2020 debut, Alonso demonstrated competitive pace, frequently securing top-10 stage finishes and recording a second-fastest time on one stage. This performance indicated his adaptability to the discipline.
The 2027 Dakar Rally will likely see Alonso compete in the T1+ Ultimate class, which features advanced off-road vehicles with enhanced suspension and wider tracks. Toyota Gazoo Racing has been a dominant force in this category.
Beyond Coma, Alonso will also reportedly be reunited with his former engineer, Daniel Gratacos. This continuity in personnel aims to optimize their preparation for the demanding rally.
Testing ahead of the 2027 Dakar Rally is reported to commence following the recent Singapore Grand Prix. However, with seven Grands Prix remaining on the current Formula 1 calendar, extensive testing mileage will be limited for Alonso.
Alonso had openly expressed a desire to return to the Dakar Rally when the timing was appropriate. His second attempt at the event is anticipated to be a significant narrative on the 2027 motorsport calendar.
