Fernando Alonso has postponed a decision regarding his Formula 1 future, indicating he will take additional time to assess his options beyond the current 2026 season. The two-time World Champion had previously suggested a post-summer break announcement, but now states there is no firm timeline for his decision.
Alonso’s current driving contract with Aston Martin is set to expire at the conclusion of the 2026 championship. Aston Martin trackside director Mike Krack confirmed the team is awaiting Alonso’s choice, with retaining the Spaniard being their primary objective.
The 45-year-old driver indicated he did not consider his future during the recent summer break. He plans to engage in discussions with Aston Martin executive chairman Lawrence Stroll and Team Principal Adrian Newey in the coming weeks.
Aston Martin has experienced a challenging start to the 2026 season. The team currently occupies tenth position in the Constructors’ Championship, having secured only one point, contributed by Alonso. This places them ahead of only Cadillac in the standings.
Significant aerodynamic updates were introduced to the AMR26 chassis at the Hungarian Grand Prix, which helped improve performance. Alonso achieved a Q2 appearance at the Hungaroring, marking his first of the 2026 season.
The team is now at Circuit Zandvoort for the Dutch Grand Prix, where Honda is introducing an upgraded power unit specification. This marks Honda’s first major performance upgrade under Formula 1’s ADUO (Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities) concession framework.
Honda engineers identified raw horsepower as the primary weakness of their power unit, noting an estimated deficit exceeding four percent compared to benchmark units like Red Bull Ford. The upgrade aims to address this deficiency, with expectations of a performance gain, though some reports suggest it may be around 15bhp.
Honda chief engineer Shintaro Orihara confirmed that the updated power unit performed as expected during a recent filming day with the new chassis. The Dutch Grand Prix weekend commenced today, Friday, August 21, with Practice 1 and Sprint Qualifying sessions.
Adrian Newey, who assumed the role of Aston Martin Team Principal from 2026, expressed confidence in Alonso’s continued presence with the team. Newey conceived the AMR26 concept during his gardening leave period before officially joining Aston Martin.
Alonso has reiterated his long-term commitment to Aston Martin in some capacity, stating he is open to stepping aside from a race seat if it proves more valuable to the team’s ambitions. He maintains a desire to continue driving, with potential interests in events such as the Dakar Rally or the Indianapolis 500.
Securing a third Formula 1 World Championship remains an ultimate aspiration for Alonso.
