Max Verstappen claimed victory at the Mexican Grand Prix, marking his sixth win at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. The Red Bull driver started from fifth position on the grid, overcoming a penalty and challenging race conditions. This result also saw Kimi Antonelli secure his maiden Formula 1 World Championship, finishing third in the race.

Verstappen’s starting position was a consequence of a one-place grid penalty issued after an incident with Liam Lawson during Friday’s second practice session. Both drivers were penalised for ‘unnecessary’ and ‘clumsy’ manoeuvres in the stadium section, specifically between Turns 12 and 14.

The stewards escalated the penalty beyond a formal warning, citing previous incidents and warnings provided during team managers’ meetings. Lawson, who qualified eighth, was further penalised with a disqualification for an MGU-K infringement and started from the pitlane due to additional engine component changes.

Lewis Hamilton started the race from pole position for Ferrari, with George Russell alongside him on the front row. Charles Leclerc began from third, and Antonelli was promoted to fourth on the grid following Verstappen’s penalty.

Early in the race, Charles Leclerc received a five-second time penalty for passing his Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton off-track during an opening lap battle for the lead. The incident occurred at Turn 4, where both cars ran wide, and Leclerc gained an advantage by cutting across the grass.

Hamilton expressed frustration over team radio, stating he was ‘pushed out by my own team-mate.’ Stewards, however, considered mitigating factors, such as Hamilton also being off-track and the incident occurring early in the race, to reduce the penalty from the standard ten seconds.

F1TV analyst James Hinchcliffe praised Verstappen’s performance and Red Bull’s strategic execution. Hinchcliffe noted that Verstappen had never previously won from fifth on the grid, nor had any driver won the Mexican Grand Prix from that starting position.

Max had never won from the fifth starting spot. Nobody had ever won the Grand Prix of Mexico from the fifth starting spot. The circumstances were not in his favour.

Verstappen was the only driver among the top eight to start on medium tyres, a strategic choice that proved effective. He quickly advanced, overtaking both Mercedes drivers within the first kilometre of the race.

Red Bull’s pit wall strategy was highlighted as crucial, particularly their timing of Verstappen’s pit stop to cover Leclerc’s time penalty. This move allowed Verstappen to gain track position over the Ferrari driver.

The race was interrupted on lap 44 by a red flag, triggered by a heavy crash involving Valtteri Bottas. The Cadillac driver suffered a front-left suspension failure under braking for Turn 1, sending his car into the barriers.

Bottas exited his car unaided but was taken to the medical centre for precautionary checks, later confirmed to be uninjured. The red flag allowed teams a free tyre change, influencing subsequent strategies.

Verstappen maintained his lead through both the standing restart and a subsequent Safety Car restart. He managed to hold off Lewis Hamilton, who finished second, and Antonelli, who secured third place and the championship.

Other post-race penalties affected the final classification. Oscar Piastri received a ten-second penalty for causing a collision with Arvid Lindblad, while Alpine drivers Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly were penalised for yellow flag infringements, losing their points finishes.
