Fernando Alonso, the two-time Formula 1 world champion, has revealed that his son, Leonard Alonso Jiménez, experienced karting at two months old. The Aston Martin driver took his infant son for a lap in a kart, holding him in his arms.
Alonso recounted the experience, stating, ‘We already took a lap in a kart. When he was two months old, I took him for a lap in my arms. He already felt the wind on his face.’ This event occurred around May of this year.
Leonard was born on March 25, 2026, to Alonso and his partner, Spanish sports journalist Melissa Jiménez. Alonso’s late arrival at the Japanese Grand Prix media day in March was due to the birth of his first child.
The 45-year-old Spaniard, who typically maintains a private personal life, expressed his desire for his son to engage with the motorsport world. He intends to bring Leonard to races as early as the 2027 season.
Alonso stated, ‘Next year I want to share the circuits, the trips around the world, and take lots of photos with him.’ He added that this would allow for more shared experiences once his Formula 1 career concludes.
This personal development coincides with significant professional news for Alonso. He recently signed a new long-term contract with Aston Martin, committing his future to the team beyond the current 2026 season and into 2027.
The decision to extend his contract came after months of speculation regarding his future in the sport. Alonso affirmed his belief in the Aston Martin project, citing strong leadership, personnel, partners, and facilities.
Aston Martin has experienced a challenging 2026 season under new technical regulations, currently holding tenth position in the Constructors’ Championship with three points, all secured by Alonso.
Alonso’s teammate, Lance Stroll, also extended his contract, ensuring an unchanged driver lineup for Aston Martin in the 2027 season.
Leonard has already received a lifetime F1 Paddock Pass. Alonso’s own introduction to karting was at three years old, influenced by his father, José Luis Alonso, who built a kart for Alonso’s sister.
