Fernando Alonso has committed to Aston Martin for the 2027 Formula 1 season, extending his record-breaking career. The announcement was made via a video that initially suggested his retirement, before revealing his continued presence on the grid.
The two-time World Champion confirmed his decision today, Tuesday, September 29, 2026, stating his ongoing passion for the sport. Alonso’s contract extension ensures he will embark on his 24th full-time season in Grand Prix racing.
Alonso addressed the speculation directly in the announcement, saying, ‘I will retire from F1…but not yet. I still feel fast and motivated and a huge passion for F1 and for the sport. So, yeah. I’m so happy to keep racing in the highest category. It is my life.’
He further added, ‘I’m very happy to sign a new contract with Aston Martin. I took my time to make this decision, but racing is my life, my passion, and I know I still have the speed and determination to compete at the highest level.’
The team also confirmed that Lance Stroll will remain alongside Alonso, extending his long-term contract with Aston Martin. This means the British team will field an unchanged driver lineup for the 2027 season, marking their fifth campaign as teammates.
Aston Martin’s 2026 season has been challenging, with the AMR26 described as uncompetitive and difficult to manage. The Honda power unit’s underperformance has been a significant factor.
The team currently occupies 10th position in the Teams’ Championship, with Alonso having scored all three of their points this season. Both Aston Martin cars retired from the recent Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Alonso’s earlier discontent this season was primarily directed at the 2026 regulations and the overall state of racing, rather than solely the team’s performance. He has advocated for more aggressive adjustments to the 2027 regulations and for concessions to improve Honda’s power unit.
Lawrence Stroll, Executive Chairman of Aston Martin, commented on the continuity: ‘Lance and Fernando have been a crucial part of our journey and we are very pleased to confirm that they will continue with us into the next chapter for the team.’
Alonso, who will turn 47 during the 2027 season, holds the record for the most F1 Grand Prix starts. His decision to continue racing was announced ahead of this weekend’s Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.
Beyond the race drivers, Aston Martin’s wider driver lineup for 2026 includes Stoffel Vandoorne and Jak Crawford as reserve and test drivers. Crawford made his Formula 1 practice debut at the 2025 Mexican Grand Prix.
