The FIA International Court of Appeal (ICA) has issued its final ruling regarding the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix results, reinstating Isack Hadjar to third place. This decision overturns a previous ruling that had seen Pierre Gasly reclaim his podium finish. The verdict, published today, Friday, September 4, confirms a significant shift in the championship standings.
Pierre Gasly, driving for Alpine, had initially crossed the finish line in third position at the Monaco Grand Prix earlier this season. However, he was subsequently handed two five-second time penalties for exceeding the pit-lane speed limit during the race.
These penalties initially demoted Gasly to seventh place in the final classification. Consequently, Isack Hadjar, competing for Red Bull, was promoted to third, marking his first podium finish for the team.
Alpine then lodged a Right of Review, arguing that an error in the pit-lane distance measurement had led to the penalties. On June 12, the stewards accepted Alpine’s evidence and rescinded both penalties, restoring Gasly to his original third place. Hadjar was then reclassified in fourth position.
This decision by the stewards was subsequently challenged by Red Bull and McLaren, who lodged an appeal with the FIA International Court of Appeal. A hearing was conducted in Paris on August 25 to review the case.
The ICA has now granted the appeals from Red Bull and McLaren. The Court set aside the June 12 decisions and reinstated Gasly’s two original five-second penalties, confirming the revised Monaco Grand Prix classification.
As a direct consequence, Pierre Gasly loses his Monaco podium and nine championship points. His total in the 2026 Drivers’ Championship now stands at 35 points, a reduction from his previous 44.
Conversely, Isack Hadjar regains his third-place finish at Monaco, securing three additional championship points. This brings his season total to 71 points, solidifying his eighth position in the Drivers’ Championship standings.
Other drivers also benefited from the ICA’s ruling. Oscar Piastri gains two points, now holding 106 points. Liam Lawson receives an additional point, increasing his total to 51, while Arvid Lindblad gains three points, reaching 25.
The Constructors’ Championship has also seen adjustments. Alpine loses nine points, dropping to sixth with 54 points. Racing Bulls gains four points, moving to fifth with 70 points. Red Bull gains three points, reaching 189, and McLaren adds two points, totaling 265.
Alpine has expressed disappointment and frustration with the outcome, stating they still maintain that Gasly did not exceed the pit lane speed limit. The team acknowledged the decision of the judging panel.
The FIA has indicated it is reviewing the methodology and operation of the current Formula 1 timing system. This review also includes related regulatory matters and judicial procedures, such as the right of review and appeal processes.
The 2026 Formula 1 season continues this weekend with the Italian Grand Prix, taking place from September 4-6.
