Aston Martin is currently powered by Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) power units for the 2026 Formula 1 season. This exclusive partnership was officially announced in May 2023, marking Honda’s full-scale return as a works engine supplier. The agreement sees Honda developing a bespoke engine for the Silverstone-based team.

Concurrently, Red Bull Ford Powertrains supplies power units exclusively to Oracle Red Bull Racing and Visa Cash App Racing Bulls. This arrangement commenced with the start of the 2026 season. Ford returned to Formula 1 as a technical partner to Red Bull Powertrains, developing the next-generation hybrid power unit.

Reports suggesting Aston Martin is in talks with Red Bull Ford for an engine deal contradict these established agreements. Both manufacturers have long-term, confirmed commitments for the current 2026 season and beyond. Such discussions would be inconsistent with the existing partnerships.

Honda’s decision to return to Formula 1 as a full works supplier was influenced by the new 2026 engine regulations. These rules mandate advanced sustainable fuels and a greater focus on electrical power. This aligns with Honda’s broader automotive goals.

The Japanese manufacturer had previously withdrawn from F1 at the end of 2021. However, the new technical framework for power units proved enticing for a full-scale re-entry. Aston Martin sought a works partner to develop a dedicated engine.

Red Bull Powertrains, in collaboration with Ford, began developing their power unit in February 2023. This project was initiated after Honda’s initial decision to withdraw from the sport. Ford provides technical expertise in battery and electric motor technology.

Ford’s return to Formula 1, after more than two decades, is a strategic technical partnership. The power units will supply Red Bull Racing and Visa Cash App Racing Bulls until at least 2030. This marks a significant investment for the American automaker.

Christian Horner, Red Bull team principal, stated in May 2023 that Red Bull Ford Powertrains would initially supply only its two owned teams. He indicated that expanding to other customer teams might be considered in ‘future years’. The focus remains on establishing the new engine manufacturer.

The 2026 regulations introduced a revised power unit configuration and new active aerodynamics. These changes aim to attract more manufacturers to the sport. The new power units feature a 350kW electric motor and a combustion engine designed for sustainable fuels.
