Fernando Alonso secured his maiden Formula 1 victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix on August 24, 2003. Driving for Renault, Alonso became the youngest Grand Prix winner in F1 history at the time. He was 22 years and 104 days old when he crossed the finish line.

This achievement surpassed the previous record held by Bruce McLaren for 43 years. Alonso’s record stood for over five years until Sebastian Vettel claimed victory at the 2008 Italian Grand Prix.

The 2003 Hungarian Grand Prix marked the thirteenth round of the 2003 Formula One World Championship. The Hungaroring circuit had undergone modifications that year, including a lengthened main straight and a tightened first hairpin, aimed at encouraging more overtaking.

Alonso started the 70-lap race from pole position, having set a qualifying time of 1:21.688. The weather conditions were warm, dry, and sunny, with an ambient temperature of 28 °C.

From the start, Alonso established a significant lead, building a 21-second advantage within the first 13 laps before his initial pit stop. He rejoined the track briefly behind Kimi Räikkönen, but regained the lead after Räikkönen made his own stop.

Alonso maintained control throughout the race, ultimately finishing with a 16.8-second lead over Räikkönen, who drove for McLaren-Mercedes. Juan Pablo Montoya, in a Williams-BMW, completed the podium in third place.

During the race, Alonso notably lapped reigning world champion Michael Schumacher, who finished in eighth position, securing a single point. Rubens Barrichello retired from the race due to a suspension failure, though no safety car period was initiated.

The victory was significant for Renault, marking their first F1 win as a constructor since the 1983 Austrian Grand Prix. It was also the first Grand Prix triumph for a Spanish driver.

In the current 2026 Formula 1 season, Fernando Alonso competes for Aston Martin. The Aston Martin AMR26, the team’s car for this year, is the first designed by Adrian Newey for the outfit.

Aston Martin has faced challenges during the initial phase of the 2026 season, with Alonso’s best grid position being 17th in Melbourne. The team had not scored a World Championship point as of April 2026.

Recent developments include a major upgrade package introduced at the Hungarian Grand Prix before the summer break. Further aero changes and a new-spec Honda power unit were deployed at the Dutch Grand Prix.

Alonso achieved Aston Martin’s best result of the 2026 season with a ninth-place finish at the Dutch Grand Prix. His current contract with Aston Martin is set to expire at the end of the season, with discussions regarding his future ongoing.
