Williams Team Principal James Vowles has acknowledged the significant impact of his drivers, Alexander Albon and Carlos Sainz, on the organisation. Vowles stated that their commitment, particularly during a challenging 2026 Formula 1 season, has been ‘incredibly powerful’ for the Grove-based squad.
The comments follow the recent confirmation that both Albon and Sainz have extended their contracts with Williams for the 2027 season.
Williams has endured a difficult start to the 2026 campaign. The FW48 chassis was delayed, significantly overweight, and has underperformed expectations.
The team currently sits ninth in the Constructors’ Championship with only 11 points.
Vowles admitted he had concerns about retaining both drivers, whom he considers ‘world championship material,’ given the team’s struggles to deliver a competitive car.
However, he expressed gratitude for their unwavering support. Vowles highlighted that the drivers ‘stood by our side’ during difficult moments, avoiding finger-pointing.
Both Albon and Sainz reportedly visited the factory to engage with the entire organisation, providing a morale boost to the staff.
‘What I’m thankful for is the moment when we had problems; they stood by our side. It wasn’t finger-pointing; it was actually: ‘Tell me what I can do,’ and they both came into the factory and spoke to the whole organisation and gave them a lift.’
Vowles emphasised that having two leaders like Albon and Sainz, who believe in the team’s long-term journey despite current setbacks, is crucial for a transforming organisation.
Carlos Sainz’s new agreement is a multi-year deal, reportedly including exit clauses based on the team’s future performance.
Alexander Albon’s contract also extends through the 2027 season, providing stability for Williams.
The team is currently participating in the Dutch Grand Prix weekend. Alexander Albon qualified 16th and Carlos Sainz 18th for the sprint race, which took place on Friday, August 21, 2026.
The previous event, the Hungarian Grand Prix in late July, saw Albon finish 17th and Sainz 18th, both two laps down.
Williams is working on upgrades, including a new chassis, expected for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in late September, as they continue to address the FW48’s fundamental issues.
