Former Formula 1 driver Robert Doornbos, aged 44, is currently in the Netherlands, combining his role as an F1 analyst with a family visit during the Dutch Grand Prix weekend. Doornbos, who resides in Dubai with his wife Chantal Bles and their two children, Josh and Jada, has returned for the event at Circuit Zandvoort.

During his visit, Doornbos reflected on a significant moment from five years prior: his post-race interview with Max Verstappen at the 2021 Dutch Grand Prix. He described this experience as a ‘privilege’ and an ‘unforgettable moment’ for him.

The 2021 event marked Formula 1’s return to the Dutch circuit after a 36-year absence. Max Verstappen secured a dominant home victory, converting his pole position into a win after a strategic battle with Lewis Hamilton. Valtteri Bottas completed the podium.

Doornbos himself competed in Formula 1 during the 2005 and 2006 seasons. He drove for Minardi in 2005 and later for Red Bull Racing in 2006, participating in a total of 11 Grands Prix. He did not score any championship points during his F1 career.

The 2026 Dutch Grand Prix is scheduled to be the final Formula 1 race held at Circuit Zandvoort under its current agreement. The circuit’s promoter opted not to extend the contract beyond this season, despite discussions regarding a potential rotation of European races.

This decision, announced in late 2024, means the 2026 race will conclude Zandvoort’s recent tenure on the F1 calendar. The circuit returned in 2021, largely driven by the popularity of local hero Max Verstappen.

The upcoming 2026 Dutch Grand Prix, the twelfth round of the current Formula 1 World Championship, will also be notable as the first time the event at Zandvoort features a sprint race format.

Beyond his past racing career, Doornbos continues his involvement in motorsport as an F1 analyst for Ziggo Sport. He had temporarily reduced his analyst commitments in late 2024 following his family’s relocation to Dubai, but has since resumed regular appearances.

Doornbos has also recently commented on the future of Max Verstappen, suggesting that an announcement regarding Verstappen’s contract with Red Bull Racing is anticipated at Zandvoort. He believes Verstappen will remain with the team through 2028.

‘I had the privilege to interview him immediately after the race. An unforgettable moment, the time flies!’
