David Coulthard has highlighted the underlying potential of Alex Albon, prompted by a striking comment from Jos Verstappen during a recent dinner. The former F1 driver recounted the conversation on the ‘Up To Speed’ podcast, which has drawn attention to the Williams driver.
The dinner included Mark Webber, Martin Brundle, and Max Verstappen’s manager, Raymond Vermeulen. During a discussion about karting, Jos Verstappen made a definitive statement about Albon’s early career talent, calling him the ‘karting GOAT’.
‘Alex Albon, in karting, was the karting GOAT.’
Coulthard expressed his surprise, noting that Jos Verstappen is typically reserved with his opinions, especially concerning drivers other than his son. Verstappen reportedly reiterated that Albon was ‘unbelievable’ in his karting days, a comment that stuck with Coulthard.
Albon’s karting record supports this high praise. He won multiple British national championships and, significantly, secured both the CIK-FIA World Cup and the European Championship in 2010. This history adds considerable weight to Verstappen’s assessment.
After a challenging period at Red Bull alongside Max Verstappen, Albon has successfully rebuilt his career since joining Williams in 2022. However, the 2026 season has proven difficult for the Grove-based team under the new technical regulations.
Williams has struggled with its FW48, which was overweight at the start of the season and has lacked consistent performance. The team missed a private pre-season shakedown, indicating early development issues with the complex 2026 cars.
The team currently sits ninth in the Constructors’ standings with 11 points after the first half of the season. These points have been hard-earned, with both Albon and teammate Carlos Sainz finding it difficult to regularly challenge for the top ten.
Sainz has scored six of the team’s points, while Albon has contributed five. Albon’s points came from a tenth-place finish in Miami and an eighth-place finish in Monaco. Sainz currently leads the qualifying head-to-head battle 8-3.
Coulthard feels for Albon, stating the current car has not provided the platform to showcase his skills. Both drivers have voiced frustration with the FW48’s limitations, with Albon noting he has to ‘under-drive’ the car significantly.
The comment from Jos Verstappen has led Coulthard to issue a ‘watch this space’ regarding Albon’s future. He suggests that if Williams can provide a competitive car, Albon has the talent to deliver exceptional results.
