Laurent Mekies, Team Principal of Visa Cash App Racing Bulls, has expressed concerns regarding the future of Red Bull Powertrains. The 2026 Formula 1 power unit regulations present a substantial challenge for the Milton Keynes-based operation.

These new regulations mandate a 50/50 split between internal combustion engine power and electrical power. Additionally, all power units must run on 100% sustainable fuels, a significant technical shift.

Christian Horner, CEO and Team Principal of Red Bull Racing, has consistently highlighted the immense undertaking for Red Bull Powertrains. He acknowledges the steep learning curve involved for the relatively new engine manufacturer.

Helmut Marko, Red Bull motorsport advisor, has also voiced apprehension. Marko points to the complexity of developing the electrical components to match established rivals like Mercedes and Ferrari.

Red Bull Powertrains has invested heavily in infrastructure and recruited extensively from competitor engine departments. However, building a competitive power unit division from the ground up requires considerable time.

The transition to the new power unit formula is a critical period for the Red Bull family of teams. Delivering a competitive engine is paramount for both Red Bull Racing and Visa Cash App Racing Bulls.

The pressure to meet performance targets for the 2026 season remains high. The project demands continuous development and significant resources to ensure readiness.
