Formula 1 drivers are expressing increasing frustration with the self-learning elements integrated into the 2026 power unit algorithms. This technology is perceived to be limiting driver control over their cars, particularly affecting straight-line performance during competitive sessions. McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella highlighted these issues following the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Stella’s comments in Hungary addressed the performance discrepancies observed between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri in qualifying. Drivers, including George Russell, have reported struggles with their power units’ unpredictable behaviour. Max Verstappen’s pass on Kimi Antonelli at Spa was also cited as an instance where the power unit influenced a move against driver intent.

Oscar Piastri described the current racing experience as a ‘crap way to go racing,’ noting instances where his car deployed electrical energy unexpectedly at Spa. These concerns directly challenge the FIA’s sporting regulations, which stipulate that drivers must operate their cars ‘alone and unaided.’

FIA single-seater director Nikolas Tombazis acknowledged the validity of driver complaints, stating their comments are ‘understandable.’ He attributed these issues to the critical importance of energy management under the new regulations, which necessitates complex strategic deployment.

Tombazis dismissed the possibility of entirely removing the self-learning algorithms. He argued that granting drivers full, unassisted control over energy deployment would lead to excessive use on corner exits, exacerbating the very problems currently being observed. He also suggested that human drivers cannot rationally manage all the required parameters.

The 2026 power units feature a 50/50 split between internal combustion and electrical power, with a significant increase in electrical output to 350 kW. This design mandates a heightened emphasis on energy recovery and deployment strategies.

The FIA had anticipated these challenges but was unable to implement substantial rule adjustments before the 2026 season. Such changes required unanimous agreement from four manufacturers, the FIA, and Formula One Management, which was not achieved. Minor tweaks were introduced at the Miami Grand Prix to mitigate ‘superclipping’ effects, but their impact has been limited.

Future adjustments are planned for the 2027 and 2028 seasons, aiming to rebalance power output towards a 60/40 split favouring the internal combustion engine. While Piastri remains sceptical about the effectiveness of these upcoming changes, Tombazis believes they will represent ‘a step better,’ though not a complete resolution.

The 2026 regulations also mandate the use of 100% advanced sustainable fuels, which present their own technical complexities regarding energy density and consistency. This adds another layer to the intricate power unit management challenges.

Despite Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali’s assertion that fans are enjoying the current racing, drivers remain united in their criticism, describing the competition as ‘artificial.’ This ongoing debate highlights a fundamental tension between regulatory objectives and driver experience.
