Fernando Alonso is currently evaluating his Formula 1 future beyond the 2026 season, with his decision contingent on the driving experience offered by the sport’s current regulations. The two-time world champion, who turned 45 on July 29, 2026, remains under contract with Aston Martin through the end of the current season.
Alonso has indicated that his commitment to continue racing hinges on whether the current generation of F1 cars can still provide him with the required adrenaline. He recently stated that the 2026 cars have not been enjoyable to drive or to watch.
Despite a challenging start to the 2026 season for Aston Martin, which has seen the team struggle with performance and reliability, Alonso maintains a strong belief in the project. The team has secured only one championship point for Alonso this season.
Alonso’s confidence extends to Adrian Newey, Aston Martin’s Team Principal and Managing Technical Partner. He expressed zero doubt that Newey will eventually deliver a championship-winning car for the Silverstone-based outfit.
The Spaniard’s current multi-year agreement with Aston Martin, signed in April 2024, aligns with the team’s works power unit partnership with Honda, which commences in 2026. Honda is scheduled to introduce an updated power unit at the upcoming Dutch Grand Prix.
Speculation regarding Alonso’s future has been ongoing, with some reports linking him to a potential return to Alpine earlier this year. However, Alonso has consistently affirmed his contractual commitment to Aston Martin.
Aston Martin ambassador Pedro de la Rosa noted in May 2024 that Alonso’s desire to continue with the team was evident even during difficult periods in 2023. Alonso had previously stated he would not keep the team waiting on his decision.
David Croft, a Sky Sports F1 pundit, recently suggested that Alonso has a five-year deal in place with Aston Martin. This agreement reportedly includes two years for driving and three years in an ambassadorial role, with the choice to continue driving resting with Alonso.
Alonso’s longevity in Formula 1 is notable, as he holds the record for the most Grand Prix starts. His decision to continue racing is primarily driven by his passion and enjoyment of the sport, rather than a decline in performance.
He has emphasized that he will not stop racing if he feels competitive and motivated. Alonso’s focus remains on finding the adrenaline and challenge that Formula 1 can offer him.
