Aston Martin has confirmed the passing of long-serving team member Mick Fern, affectionately known throughout the Formula 1 paddock as ‘Biscuit’. Fern, a respected figure, had dedicated 35 years to the sport.
Fern served as a tyre technician, playing a crucial role in managing the tyres for one half of the Aston Martin garage during race weekends.
His extensive career saw him work with the Silverstone-based squad through its various guises since 1999, when the team operated under the Jordan banner. He most recently rejoined the team in 2015.
Fern’s absence due to illness was noted at the recent Hungarian Grand Prix, where the team and the wider paddock extended their well wishes for his recovery.
During the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend, Aston Martin displayed a sign outside their garage, in front of the car on the pre-race grid, and in the paddock. The sign read: ‘Biscuit. Thinking of you.’
Aston Martin released a statement via social media, confirming Fern passed away peacefully. The team described him as a ‘true stalwart’ who consistently showed loyalty and support to those around him.
The statement further highlighted Fern’s welcoming nature, noting he ‘welcomed everyone with open arms and made our travelling world feel more like home’. His warmth and humour will be greatly missed.
Fern’s vibrant personality and willingness to assist teammates were well-known. He was always ready to share insights with guests in the garage.
He was featured in a Sky Sports F1 segment last season, showcasing his work on Lance Stroll’s side of the garage. Additionally, Aston Martin highlighted Fern in a 2021 behind-the-scenes video detailing the life of an F1 tyre.
Pedro de la Rosa, Aston Martin’s team ambassador, paid tribute to Fern.
‘Biscuit, you will be with us forever. You are a legend, a hero and an example for all of us. A big hug to all friends and family. RIP.’
The news of Fern’s passing has resonated deeply across the motorsport community, prompting an outpouring of tributes from fans and fellow team members alike.
