Aston Martin is set to introduce a substantially revised AMR26 at the upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix, aiming to address the car’s challenging performance during the initial phase of the 2026 Formula 1 season. This significant upgrade package represents a concerted effort to improve the team’s standing.

The Silverstone-based squad has experienced a difficult start to the current campaign, currently occupying the last position in the Teams’ Standings with a single point scored by Fernando Alonso in Monaco.

Fernando Alonso has endured three retirements this season, with one instance at the Canadian Grand Prix attributed to discomfort with his seat position.

The initial specification of the AMR26 was deemed poor, and the Honda power unit has under-delivered, contributing to the team’s struggles.

Adrian Newey, Managing Technical Partner, has spearheaded the decision to implement a wholesale overhaul rather than incremental updates.

The ‘B-spec’ AMR26 is expected to feature a lighter chassis and a new aerodynamic concept.

Changes include revisions to the rear suspension, nose, and other aerodynamic surfaces, with a significant focus on weight reduction.

Team Principal Mike Krack acknowledged the aggressive timeline for parts production, indicating potential tightness on spare components for the Hungarian debut.

Following the Hungarian Grand Prix, Honda is scheduled to introduce a revised power unit at the Dutch Grand Prix after the summer break.

Fernando Alonso’s contract with Aston Martin concludes at the end of the 2026 season, placing him in the driver market for 2027.

Alonso has stated that his decision regarding his Formula 1 future will hinge on the regulations and his enjoyment of driving the current hybrid cars, rather than solely on Aston Martin’s performance.

He expressed commitment to the Aston Martin project despite the team’s current difficulties.

Alonso noted that the team’s current performance does not reflect its true potential, which he believes is significantly higher.

The two-time world champion anticipates making a decision on his future around the summer break.

Aston Martin’s long-term strategy includes a partnership with Honda as its exclusive power unit supplier from 2026, transitioning into a works team.

This partnership aims for full integration between the power unit and chassis design under the new technical regulations.

The 2026 regulations mark a significant reset, with changes to both chassis and power unit, resulting in lighter, more compact cars with active aerodynamics.

Aston Martin’s efforts with the B-spec car are intended to demonstrate the team’s capability to reverse its fortunes and establish a clear development path for future seasons.
